The standard of English literacy is improving throughout Asia. Its not the national language in most of the countries, apart from Singapore (and they probably speak the worst of any of the countries) but generally if people here have been university-educated they generally can understand and speak English. A lot of them will have done the standard English language tests numerous times as they are often a pre-requisite for jobs with foreign companies so they are used to taking these tests. I suspect the Australian nurse thought as she spoke English that she didn't have to practice and failed for that reason. Most Asians learn quickly how to take and pass tests as that's the way they learn in school - having that English language qualification does not however make them fluent in English. That comes with being immersed in an English-only speaking environment. If we need the doctors and nurses from overseas as we cannot/ don't want to train enough, there are three options: 1) we learn to deal with it by speaking more slowly and clearly to them (which I am sure won't go down too well with most Brits) 2) we hire them and then they spend at least a year in non-medical roles or on intensive language courses while being paid at the normal rates for doctors and nurses by the NHS (which probably won't go down too well with the government) 3) we identify candidates prior to their university education and pay the cost of them being educated at UK University Medical facilities while tying them into work in the NHS for a certain number of years afterwards (which would require a major overhaul of our medical teaching facilities) Alternatively we could just carry on moaning about the fact that there are too many foreigners working in the NHS and some of them don't speak very good English.
I've got my living room grey and done the feature wall, yellow. I've never liked it, it looks stupid. I live by myself though and I'm the worst when it comes to this sort of sfuff. I'll probably paint that wall red now.
Deffo. Some kid stole my phone out my hand in london late at night. I always thought i would just leave it. Chased after him running circles round some big bushes til his mate stepped in to smack me (i wasnt sure sure he was just watching). Its when i stopped and we knew it was over and they casually walked away. Thinking back i was lucky i didnt get beaten up or stabbed
