Thoughts from yesterday.
Borthwick Jackson is a very good left back. Sound defensively, looks comfortable on the ball and got forward both before and after the sending off. Put in some very useful crosses with his left foot that on another day would have resulted in a goal(s). Noticeable that after he went off Preston had their 2 best chances of the match. Expect him to play now as our first choice left back for the rest of the season.
Ayling solid at right back, so full back positions now baring injury/suspensions should be nailed down and this can only help get a solid understanding throughout the defence/team.
Pontus a little sluggish as he didn't play as much in pre season as others. He's now back and will be better once he gets a few games under his belt.
The criticism of Phillips is harsh in my opinion. It was a battle in the midfield, Preston were very aggressive both on and off the ball and I feel he held his own. Yes he could have done little better at times but was subbed as soon as the sending off happened so didn't get the chance to play with more time and space. It was his turn and surge with the ball that caused the sending off as well.
Our wide players were too ineffective, especially Roofe although he should have been played clear through on goal in the first half if Hernandez had chosen the correct option. Allioski had a difficult afternoon when on the right as their left back was aggressive in the challenge and let him know he was there right from the off. Personally would have preferred to have had Sacko on the bench as think his speed would have caused more problems for their left back especially after he was booked.
Wood tried hard but wasn't at his sharpest, probably just one of those days when it didn't go right for him. Could have easily got on the end of a couple of Borthwick Jacksons crosses with a bit more understanding of each others games.
After the sending off we played well for about 20 mins and created 3 or 4 very decent opportunities. Sometimes it just doesn't go for you and yesterday was one of those days. We should have shown more patience, we lost our shape after Dallas came on which meant the last 7mins plus stoppage time we didn't work and move the opposition around as we should. Thankfully it didn't cost us the game but it very nearly did.
Saw WJ sitting in his car after the game so went over to say hello and had a quick chat. Was meeting friends in town so no time to come and meet the others but WJ assures me you're all a good bunch.
For me there were quite a lot of positives to take from the game. TC will have learn't a hell of a lot about himself, his players and how tough and uncompromising this league can be.
Finally there are 11 teams in the Championship on 1 point or less, so think we are doing quite nicely considering all the changes in the summer.
