Obviously you don't know your Cockney rhymning slang - it is the shortening for Berkhampstead Hunt and therefore, originally, a very heavy insult. Or is the said town now written Burkhampstead ? Sod the Cambridge English dictionary - this is the Poplar English Dictionary which has priority on this one <laugh>

You have spelt Berkhamsted completely wrongly, are you sure you are not a German spy?

I expect they kept you well inside the Hemel borders. We are very fussy who we let in.

Perhaps you should do some research first......

    How do you spell Berkhamsted?

    Berkhamsted

During most of the 19th century, and into the 20th century, there was no universally agreed way of spelling Berkhamsted - or Berkhampstead and other variations were not uncommon. For instance the official name for civil registration was Berkhampstead up to 1939 when it became Berkhamsted. The FindMyPast censuses names the town (when doing place name searches) as
    Berkhamsted (1851, 1861, 1891, 1901)
    Berkhamstead (1851, 1871, 1901, 1911)
    Berkhampstead (1841, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901, 1911)

I am of course assuming that you can read. If not i'll try to do it phonetically. Nevertheless, 'burk' seems to hit the spot.

The Kiwis have got the right idea - mind you, I'm not too sure how often people in the UK visit a beach...

So, since 1939 Berkhamsted has been spelt Berkhamsted. This is the universal way of spelling it now, if you can understand simple facts.

By law of precedence, which is established in all British law courts I solemnly declare that once a name (or any other part of speech) has been used historically that it can henceforth be used again, and again, once accepted at any point of time - regardless of common modern usage. By the same token, if Shakespearian English is used by a modern schoolboy it cannot be marked as wrong - having once been ok.

Nobody around Berkhamsted will spell it any other way. Those with a lack of knowledge might until corrected, usually with embarrassment. We tend to discourage idiots and oddballs from mixing in our community, we recommend Hemel to those.

Are you referring to Hamelamestede, or Hamelhamsted, or Hemlamstede or to the now rather vulgar, common name Hemel Hempstead ? However, we have taken the thread far enough off course - but then nothing of any sense was coming from your direction anyway and so it didn't matter.

I used to live in Hemel in times gone by. It has gone downhill a lot since then.

I will settle for Berko, it's more descriptive if you are typical of its inhabitants.

There has been a huge drop in renewable energy since the UK government withdrew financial support for most schemes. While other countries around the world are making big strides to meeting targets, in the UK there is a real danger that the targets written into law will be missed. Wind turbines can help if they are in the right places, although they are a scam in many cases. We have seen a lot of barns erected that have roofs that are totally solar panels, which are not a blot on the landscape, and there haven't been reports of I'll effects on people's health.
