Turns out my 17 year old 3 Series, picked up for a song with only 20k on the clock (genuine) will be liable for a £12 daily charge in London, from October 2021. So I’ll have to **** it off and get some sort of low fat gay Toyota.

Gutted actually, but as a Guardian reading right-on lefty I’ll have to swallow it.

It’s not a diesel. Which is why it came as a surprise that it will fail the ULEZ standards.

Diesel is well on the way out ... good points already made above

Family member just received a brand new 330d, a model that's now been discontinued because they don't want to put 6 pot engines in these cars anymore. Dealership was actually confused and kept saying it was a 320d, but it was bought and paid for just before the plant stopped taking orders on that model so one of the last off the line

It's a shame because these diesel engines have got some proper torque under them, x drive as well so it goes through all the wheels nicely, but the culture and the industry are moving on

Car itself is lovely ... I'm not such a fan of where they've taken the exterior styling but the interior is really nice, fancy lights that change colour and touchscreens everywhere, all that. I've got a 2017 2 series and it feels like going back to the f*cking stone age getting in that now after driving the new model

German cars represent a good choice on the used market, high quality all over, reliable, stylish, previous owner has taken the hit on depreciation having it from new, so there's decent value in them too. If looked after properly these cars are good up to and beyond 100,000 miles, that's high mileage but they go and go

surprisingly little really. Just usual maintenance. Now it needs some serious stuff it’s time to bin it off.

gutted though. Love my van and it suits my lifestyle perfectly. They are crazy money to buy another one though. Looking at best part of £10k even for a 10-15 year old one.

If you got in a car now and drove at the average speed in this country 24 hours a day with no pauses to eat, sleep, drink or toilet then you'd hit 520k miles at around Christmas.

    2022

520,000 miles / 25.5 miles per hour (approximate average speed driven in the UK) = 20,400 hours of driving.

That is 850 days continuous driving.

In London the average speed is 6.7 mph. So driving around there would take roughly a decade of just driving without any gaps, 520k around 2030.
