I think they hacks missed a digit...The fact that some are claiming it has a £65m buyout clause. Do they think our Chairman is an amateur?
The problem with signing overpaid bilge like Sissoko (rumoured to be our highest earner on £90,000 per week) is that every it gets other players looking at their own contracts and thinking 'surely I deserve more?'
That story was bollocks for two reasons:The problem with signing overpaid bilge like Sissoko (rumoured to be our highest earner on £90,000 per week) is that every it gets other players looking at their own contracts and thinking 'surely I deserve more?'
That story was bollocks for two reasons:
i.) According to this year's FM he is earning £80k p/w
ii.) Even at £80k p/w he was never our highest-paid player: Alderweireld and Lamela are also on £80k, Son is on £85k and Lloris is on £95k
I don't think that's really Kane's style. Seems to work his arse off, both on and off the pitch.Great, now a season in "Eriksen mode" .

Either way, it merely serves to add to the tragicomic epic that was the Sissoko transfer. Most Toons I know assure me that he was on no more than £40-45k at Newcastle. The player refused to even answer the phone to Koeman, which left us the only interested party, despite the lateness of the hour. He shouldn't have been offered a penny more than £60k and the fact that we almost doubled his previous wages suggests that we were desperate to sign him, which is in turn a thought that makes me nauseous.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't think people realise just how damaging this specific transfer will prove to be to our club when all of its ramifications are taken into account. Poch took massive strides in his first few season to uproot the culture of sloth that had our club in its grips, full of overpaid, under-performing journeymen like Paulinho and Adebayor. He worked tirelessly to replace that set up with a strict meritocracy where rewards were reserved for effort, not name or price tag. The Sissoko signing pulled the rug out from underneath that in so many ways.
