This board is wonderful. Somehow we've managed to get a thread about the 45th President of the USA onto some old post-war, low grade meat product. Though on second thoughts.........perhaps not such a big difference after all.
Hate spam, used to have it fried in the sixties. Also used to have lots of offal, like heart, liver, kidneys. Hate all of them now except liver
Apologies for the music vids on here, I posted them on the music forum so have not got a clue how they popped up on here as well.
They used to do deep fried spam fitters for school dinner at Colwell Rd. I loved them. And soggy cabbage. Very, very underestimated were school dinners in the 60's and 70's, in my book. And tapioca pudding too.
Apology accepted, though I suspect you're the type of person who'd borrow someone's pencil and deliberately get it pissed.
Can you remember semolina or rice pudding with a lump of jam to make it seem more exotic. Used to hate the mashed potato at school, always stuck the lump in the gravy then stuck it to the underside of the dinner table so you could show a clean plate and get out of the hall. If there was a queue to get the plates checked you could hear the "plop" as lots of lumps of spud dropped onto the floor!
Steak and Kidney pie is only way I can eat Kidneys... As a kid thought kidney was just a name, didn't realise it really had kidney in it. Like spotted dick doesn't really have dick... God I hope not anyway. Hate liver, couldn't have it now anyway. Never tried heart. I remember as kids we used to fight over the neck of the chicken/turkey... Now for the life of me can't think why.
Nothing beats frying up some onions and mixing in corned beef and baked beans on a cold winter day. Warms you up quickly. Don't have many cold days here though. I know I've had spam at some point in my life as a small child, but honestly don't remember eating it or have any idea what it tastes like.
What I find funny is that Corned Beef used to be "cheap"...quite expensive now. . But in a sandwich with Brown Sauce! excellent! Spam is mashed up, post ejaculate donkey balls. What about Savaloy Dip...smoked sausage, greasey gravy and pease pudding...in a bap...As a kid in Sunderland I dreaded pease pudding in those school dinner aluminium trays...the local kids went at it like it was cocaine . ..learned to appreciate it when I went back later on the beer. Oh and that weird pink blamange ****e....govt experiment on kids if I ever saw one..
Is right that, about corned beef. Crumbled, Wiltshire ham is cheaper than corned beef in Tesco. The dog loves hearts and I try and pick them up cheap at the bargain counter @ 19.00 after I've been to the gym. Boil them and chop them up and sprinkle in his winalot biscuits with them. I was a veggie (except for fish, didn't give them up) for 15 years when I did distance running (long time ago now), but the meat I missed most? well roast chicken is sound in sunday dinner, and sirloin steak takes some beating, but... bacon. Oh yes, sorry little piggies, but the SMELL of cooking bacon is almost as gorgeous as the taste. Bacon and runny egg - ****, yeah.
I have heard a lot of ex vegetarians say bacon is what got them eating meat again. It is also the worst meat you can eat for causing cancers apparently, most people think it is red meat but bacon and any cured/processed meat is more dangerous. As always everything in moderation is the best bet
Being a poor boy from the estate, my nana used to cook alot of offal. Sausage and liver casserole and heart along with the obligatory blind scouse. I swear to god that women could do things with a bit of offal, that would make the animal thankful it had died. Its a nigh on impossible to get heart up here, i went the butchers, and asked for heart, he thought it was for the dog. ****ing philistine. Oh and my grandad used to make homemade black pudding, food of the gods.
