Each state is assigned a certain number of votes based on its population. There are a total of 538 electoral votes.

It's not that you have to get to 270 first. It's that 270 is the amount you need to guarantee a majority of electoral votes. If you get 270, your opponent can only get a maximum of 268.

There were 4 passengers on board, but only 3 parachutes.
The 1st passenger said, "I am Steph Curry, the best NBA basketball player. The Warriors and my millions of fans need me, and I can't afford to die." So he took the 1st pack and left the plane.
The 2nd passenger, Donald Trump, said, "I am the newly-elected U.S. President, and I am the smartest President in American history, so my people don't want me to die." He took the 2nd pack and jumped out of the plane.
The 3rd passenger, the Pope, said to the 4th passenger, a 10 year old schoolboy, "My son, I am old and don't have many years left, you have more years ahead so I will sacrifice my life and let you have the last parachute."
The little boy said, "That's okay, Your Holiness, there's a parachute left for you. America 's smartest President took my schoolbag."

Or, now that he is responsible for 318 million people, he will actually realise he needs to calm down. We will see what happens but I don't think it will be as bad as some people think.

Some people are going way overboard on this...

Yes he's a massive twat and said loads of silly policies (that won't happen anyway).

But talking about a nuclear war/ww3?

I think there is pretty much 0 chance of Trump calming down and being responsible. If he had any ability to do that he would have done so already. His behavior wasn't some sort of an election gimmick. It cost him more than it helped him.

But at the same time, I don't think he has any plans to go wild with power either. I think he mostly just likes to make speeches and have everyone applaud him. He will spend most of his time talking himself and his brand up at his own hotels and such, just like he's sort of been doing. And a lot of time battling with the press. Hopefully, that will pretty much occupy all his time.

I think Pence is the new Dick Cheney who will actually run things. Which is quite horrible if you are a woman or gay or a minority. If you are socially liberal at all, it will be a disaster. But OTOH, it could be okay in other areas. Pence is a pretty steady hand.. he knows how to run stuff (as did Cheney). I also don't think Pence is quite as sinister as Cheney in terms of sort being paranoid a Christian American vs the world for global dominance. I think he wants things to run somewhat well and smoothly, if for no other reason then he might want to be President.

It's not optimal by any stretch. But still, if forced I would take a Pence/Christie shadow government over Cheney/Rumsfeld. And we survived Cheney/Rumsfeld.

I never said anything about a nuclear war. What I am particularly concerned about is the probability that Trump will renege on the climate change agreements under pressure from Big Oil. That will give other countries the excuse to put short term business gain in front of preserving life as we know it on Planet Earth. And it's already nearly too late to stop the trend unless drastic measures are taken now, today.

ACA is dead, the GOP will nuke it from orbit. That is around 20m people getting their health care taken away. If that isn't "as bad as some people think" I don't know what is.

The problem with both the Paris Agreement and Obamacare is that Congress probably hates them even more than Trump does. Trump won't even have to do anything active to make this happen. Just sign the bills when they put them on his desk.

Amendment 69, the ballot measure known as ColoradoCare that would have created a universal health care system in Colorado, was soundly defeated Tuesday night.

At 8:30 p.m., with nearly 1.8 million votes counted across the state, the amendment was trailing 79.6 percent to 20.4 percent, according to preliminary state figures. Throughout the campaign, the measure had polled better with Democrats than Republicans. But even in left-leaning Denver, the amendment was losing 2-to-1, according to early returns.

    ...

It would have been paid for, largely, through a 10 percent payroll tax — workers at businesses would have been responsible for a third of the tax, while their employers would have picked up the rest; the self-employed would have paid the full 10 percent.

    ...

The cooperative’s budget, at about $36 billion a year when fully implemented, would have dwarfed the state government’s budget.

Health care in the US is going back to being for the rich only. **** the poor people.

My favourite comment of the day.

"At the end of the day when we ask ourselves how on earth did America vote in Donald Trump as president:

You need to remember that well over 40% of Americans think that the world was created 4000 years ago and that dinosaur bones are a conspiracy of the mainstream media designed to get people sent to hell.

When you look at it in that context the question isn't how on earth did they vote for Trump but how on earth have they gone so long WITHOUT voting for someone like Trump."

We should have all known he would win anyway. We all know Lisa Simpson will be the first female POTUS... <whistle>

On a funny side note from that... in that episode there's a mention that she's taking over from 'President Trump' <laugh>
