Just heard a full on Barney between the fragrant witch Julia Harltley Brewer and old Grauniad man Michael White on the wireless. He called her a liar and she mocked his age. He apologised for setting a bad example, she didn't. All over the court ruling. She rather scuppered her own 'will of the people' case by highlighting the fact that, unlike the proportional representation and Scottish independence votes, the EU referendum was advisory and not mandatory. She was relaxed about politicians sacking judges, which the Mail seems to want in addition to sub social media mockery of those who brought the case, he pointed out that we managed to get this independence of the judiciary hundreds of years ago. She railed against elites, he pointed out that the people who own the papers and media outlets she works for are just that. All good fun in modern Britain.
I have a house in France and I can tell you it is a nightmare to even change a window. It took us over a year including 6 meetings and 5 sets of plans. They even sent out some lady from head office who wasted 3 hours at our house trying to see what we wanted. All we wanted was to replcace a wooden window that was identical in everyway. I went to the bank to pay in some money and I was in there 20 mins. I was only one there. I kid you not the guy sat at his desk tapping on the PC keys for 10 mins. He then passed the slip onto another worker. They have to keep everyone employed and the spend 90% of time form filling. I am not looking forward to painting the windows as we have to speak to the Mayor about that.
Ok....................... Judges have been making political or liberal, politically correct judgments, orders and sentences all my adult life. The brexit decision is just another. There are precedents of Royal Prerogatives and this could have been used in this case. One of the judges is an ex labour chief lawyer and another set up a Euro law organisation. They are biased and pro Europe. This whole episode is about frustrating the will of 17.4 million people who voted to leave, the biggest mandate ever!! Parliament have already voted on this when they voted 6 to 1 in favour of the referendum and the government pledged on their leaflets to every household (costing 9 million quid!) that the will of the people would be implemented. MPs and Lords will now add amendments to the bill that has to go through the houses of parliament, resulting in a watered down brexit. The whole thing stinks and the noise from remainers, shouting down from their moral high ground about people voting for our parliament to get back control and getting what they asked for is nauseating and deafeningly pathetic. They think every brexit voter is thick or racist or both. Condescending doesn't begin to describe these own-country hating luvvies. Remainers have never accepted the result and whinge and whine on and on and on and on, even though the Bank of England have now admitted that they got their terrible predictions for the economy hopelessly wrong in the event of a brexit vote and have, in fact, made their biggest ever upward adjustment in their predictions for the next two years. Wealthy money men love the uncertainty that is being caused and make wads at others' expense. Unfortunately, the remainers will frustrate the will of the people till the whole thing is a terrible mess. This Country can go it alone and be a huge success, but the left wing liberal elite and champagne socialists will continue to nobble their own Country.
Let me tell you a story... Once upon a time the UK government held a referendum. In it, a majority of people voted for the country to make a significant, long-lasting decision regarding the EU. Not everyone liked that decision. Those who did not just wouldn’t stop talking about it - always pointing out when things didn’t go well, taking the things that did go well for granted and constantly coming across things to get angry about. They continued to speak out, complain and protest to the point where the government had another referendum and those people prevailed this time, 52% of those who voted against 48%. Now, some of the 52% are upset that some of the 48% won’t just shut up. That’s a bit rich. No-one tried to suppress the Eurosceptics when they were in the minority and the UK was getting closer to the EU. A democracy permits dissent and discussion. The UK is still a democracy, despite the wishes of some. Now the UK is changing course and extracting itself from the EU, the same British (and Irish) generosity for free speech should apply. All 100% of the country is going to leave, not just the people who voted “leave”. Everyone is entitled to be heard and express their views. Some might say the Eurosceptics spent 30+ years undermining the EU - especially the elite who own the media and set the front page agenda - and stopping it from being a better place. The idea that “people are talking the UK down” and are therefore “disloyal” and “not patriots” or even “traitors” is a disgraceful, divisive fantasy that doesn’t deserve anyone’s support. People just have different points of view on how our country moves ahead. And it's everyone's country. All 64 million of us. It doesn't just belong to the 17 million who voted to leave. The government should never forget their responsibilities to us all.
Cheap properties there Ellers A bit hutchy dans hiver? I am in Languedoc in the national park nearest city is Beziers at new place I purchased two years ago Old wine making house with my own presses and caves I brought it as it has land next to river and I love my barbel and carp fishing I had a farm in the Dordogne for 10 years and after that a town house again in the Languedoc I do two weeks there and two weeks in south London currently but working to be in France more Great to know another French property owner on this board
It's totally accepted by me that leave won the poll but acting upon that seems fishy to me on how it's all played out 48% of the voters in the poll should be entitled to ensure that it all done above board 52% should also want this I believe that you break down that 52% you will find a lot of troubled views ... So much so that the figure would strink big time ... The 52 figure is not united whereas the 48 would be IMO that must require some democracy before some old bat who is unknown and unproven can make such an decision
I couldn't afford the French Riviera so it had to be a renovation in Limousin. I spent 3 months out there last year. Languedoc is a nice area. I stayed there 2 years ago and drove through this beautiful village with trees on either side of the road with people sitting outside resturants drinking wine. (lazy gits should have been working).
Especially for Goldie and Col. Apparently some bonkers Tory MP said that the BBC should play God Save The Queen every night to celebrate Brexit.
Now had the misfortune to see the headlines about the judges in the Sun, Mail, Express and Telegraph. Ugly, ignorant, rabble rousing, hypocritical, odious garbage written by people who dont believe a word of it, just surfing the nasty populist wave. Anybody who doesn't believe that the independence of the judiciary is fundamental to whatever British democracy is is either an idiot or a crypto fascist. Kudos to Tory MPs Dominic Grieve, Bob Neill, Bernard Jenkin, Jesse Norman and Tory peer Lord Faulks for speaking out on this. In direct contradiction of Irritable Bowel Smith, Sajid Javid, Liz Truss, who should clearly resign as Lord Chancellor.
Thoughtful of you, Strolls. I always enjoy a bit of entertaining anarchism from Rotten and Katz. Afraid I didn't stand to attention through it though...
The silence from May and Truss over these disgraceful attacks is deafening. This is an excellent piece..... https://thesecretbarrister.com/2016/11/04/liz-truss-is-unfit-for-office-and-should-resign/
'The intellectually backwards rump of the Tory party' excellent. Shame it isn't a rump. Perhaps some people would prefer to be in a place where politicians can sack judges. Like Turkey, where the elected leader can imprison them without trial too. That's the way to deal with 'enemies of the people' surely?
They do my friend try getting up earlier X I have found a deep work ethic in my time in all of France (city life excluded of course) they are all generally on it when it's required Why work in the hot sun ... It's impossible I have found 11 - 4 typically is a dead time I even get thrown out of my local cake shop at 12 as they close for lunch
