I could sing at one time - too many ***s later I can now croak a tune but I never got to grips with playing any instrument
Sorry, the clip just reminded me of an angry old sailor who had drunk a lifetime of dark rum! Brilliant clip though, had me in stitches mate
Ah! that answers it!! I ONLY drink Golden rums and never that BLACK stuff. Now if you want advice on rums then I'm only too willing to advise.
I'm a rum drinker myself Mainly the dark stuff - with the occasional 'sailor jerry' if im feeling a bit gay.
You really have to widen your scope: If you have rum with Coke or in any long drink then you can't go wrong with bajan rums - Mount Gay Eclipse, Cockspur or Hernandez or Angosturra (T&T rums) For sipping - Angosturra 1824, Mount Gay Extra Old, Pussers 12 YO. If your feeling silly try Puncheon Rum. If your feeling suicidal then 151 (from the Dominican Republic) its 151 degree proof!! Perhaps the strongest golden rums come from Greneda but you're unlikely to find them in the UK
I lived in Barbados a while back, so im tuned into my Bajan rums. Went to the original Mount Gay distillery just near Bridgetown which was a good day out (what i can remember of it!). A lot of the rums i drunk when in the Caribbean seem to be impossible to find over here
I'm thinking of starting a tribute band. I worked on an album by former Cocteau Twin Will Heggie's band, Lowlife. This is my favourite track, partly because guitarist Cheg played the entire drum track in one take on the pads of a drum machine the size of a paperback:
When Mount Gay had their visitors centre down in Spring Garden we visited as you do and my son. me and my wife were left in the bar for about 1 hour. As the barman left he said help yourself - so we did! I bought 6 btls of 1.75L Extra Old in plastic to 'bring back in the case' and even got a case rate on that!!. We flew back via Grenada and the customs there asked me to open the case. When I did they just laughed and wished me luck at Gatwick! I've never tried to look so innocent in all my life going through the green channel
My first 'rum' experience in Barbados was - just got off the plane and walked into a rum shack. Asked for 2 rum and cokes (as the Mrs wanted one too) the bar man (some bloke who was absolutely plastered) came over with 2 big bottles of rum and 2 bottles of coke. I was expecting a glass of rum not a bottle! We sat in the bar and got smashed, when we left the bill was about £6! Dunno why i came back to be honest
Barbados is nice, the beaches on the West coast are brilliant but I prefer Tobago, it's just beautiful. Two-thirds of the island is rain forrest. Problem is its too close to trinidad and the security situation is deteriorating (its the same on many islands). I spent 5 years living there on the Winward side of the island amongst the locals - paradise.
Just to kick tonight off some T&T soca
This is where I'd rather be tonight. Sunday School a real street party. Kicks off about 9pm with some pan and finishes about 5am when the sun comes up. These guys do a mean version of the Hallelujah Chorus in their set.
Havana Club! mmmmmmmmmmmmmm! Havana Club! Also double Mount Gay, lime, ice and ginger beer top drink.
try some Angostura 1824 over a little ice. All the flavour of of vanilla and honey fills your mouth (though there's none in the rum) and then it warms all the way down - just like a good rum should. It's expensive - even in T&T but it's nice
I like Matusalem when I'm going expensive, will try your suggestion next time a I buy a bottle though. So this is now the Rum Thread!
Set in Puerto Rico - dat ain't no carribean island dat some American shihole up North!! try the eastern carribean. Start off in Barbados ( the most english island), then take an overnight yacht ride to St. Vincent and The Grenadines ( beautiful islands just like Robinson Crusoe), then sail to Grenada (fine strong local rums) then on to Tobago (just sheer bliss). Only go to Trinidad if you are mad or its carnival (like Tobago the whole island mashed an jumpin at Carnival - makes Barbados's Crop Over look like a tea party!)
Music from my youth before I got better taste. Cheesy but fun.
