Football journalists have been making the presumption/assumption/mistake for years, thinking that as soon as a select band of clubs announce their interest in a player, it's a done deal. Which is why Alan Shearer led the scoring charts for Manchester United for several seasons...

Back to Trezeguet - if he took a wage cut, that might imply interest, but at the same time he isn't the striker we need.

He did indicate he'd be interested in a move a couple of seasons back (although this is paper talk, so take that with a pinch of wasabi) but, obviously, we didn't go and get him.

5 league goals in 2 seasons would suggest that he's rarely effective in that role.

The problem is we have plenty of strikers capable of 10-15 league goals on our books already - Defoe and Pav certainly are, and it isn't utterly unrealistic to say Crouch could - it's just we don't have any that are consistent.

For example, Defoe cans core when he's confident, but he toe-pokes the ball to the keeper when he isn't, whilst Pav scores for a few games, but doesn't score any more until his next purple patch comes along.

I disagree with that statement. Trezuguet was a good striker However, in his heyday, Owen was as good as anybody.

Owen in his hey day was playing for second rate uefa cup Liverpool and England, whilst Trezeguet was playing for a great Juventus side pre 2006 demotion, winning scudetto's, playing in the champions league every season, winning world cup and euro championships with france, just cause he ain't english, don't make Owen instantly better than him

What utter nonsense to assume that I think Owen the better player just because he's English. Also, it was Owens' choice to stay at Liverpool. He could have chosen almost any top club in Europe. In fact, Real Madrid thought he was such a **** player, that they bought him.
In La Liga he held the record for the most goals scored in the number of minutes played, despite the recurring hamstring injury.

It is obviously pointless to try and debate with someone who uses such spurious arguements. Whatever you may think, people who know more, awarded the Ballon D'or to Michael Owen - How many has Trezeguet won??? Owen, in his heydey was a match for any striker in the world, including Trezeguet.

The widely differing views are making it interesting. Owens record is not to be sneezed at, and I'm not dissing him, but he never achieved the milestones associated with great strikers, 20+ league goals in a season, and 30 goals all comps. Not with Liverpool and definitely not with anyone else.

I think, unfortunately, the injuries cut short the career of one of the best strikers our country has produced, for many years.

I personally think that HE is the one who is cutting his career short. He's showing absolutely no ambition by festering away on the Man Utd bench (if he's lucky). Why doesn't he go and try to get his career back on track by moving to a smaller club - there's no glory in making token appearances at the end of games to save the legs of bigger and better players and then getting a trophy at the end of it. Saha got it right - if you're not playing for whatever reason, move clubs and try to actually contribute to something somewhere else.

He wasn't at his best at Newcastle but even then when his injuries were at their worst he still made more of an impact there than he has at United.

I can't totally disagree with that. He seems to prefer to be a small fish in a big pond. Also, he obviously knows that he's not the player he once was.

My arguement was that, in his heydey, which admittedly, is a while ago now, he was one of the top strikers in the world. And, one of the best that England had produced for a long time. This all started because somebody claimed that he'd NEVER been any good - with which, I totally disgree.
