Agree 100% with Ensil, it's becoming a bit boring reading your comments on Brad.

He's a fantastic goalkeeper with lots of experience and quality to bring to the table. Before you dish out the free transfer trollope, lots of decent players have gone on free transfers and made a great impact. Van Der Sar, Gallas, Davids, Ballack, Tuncay, Schwarzer etc...

Get behind him and give him a chance for gods sake.

Gomes needs competition, he's not getting it off Cudicini and Plebisoaker.

i can't understand thorstvedt view.he says you need a reliable keeper the Defence can trust. The point being the defence don't trust him, because of the many mistake's he's made.freidal does'nt make so many, and also command's his area, gomes does'nt

No offence to Erik The Viking, as I remember him being a very good keeper for us, but I think he's missed the point entirely here.

We only had Stipe Pletikosa on loan last season, though he's now available for nothing, so we needed to bring in a replacement.
Getting in Friedel as competition for Gomes and Cudicini is a bit of a no-brainer.
He's massively experienced, knows the league extremely well and he'll hopefully be able to pass some of that on to Gomes.

There were times when the Brazilian played last season when he was clearly injured and others when his confidence was obviously shot.
I'd like to think that he could spend this season largely recovering his form and fitness, studying his mistakes and playing in our cup games.
Learning from someone that's been through all of this should be good for him, if he can keep his chin up and look to the long term.

I totally disagree with him saying the defence have lots of confidence in Gomes, although I must admit Friedel wouldn't have been my first choice to sign.

No. I won't get behind him and give him a chance because I don't believe him to be either good enough, or what we needed. I think he wanted a pay-day and we gave it to him, more fool us.

I will get behind the team, if he is in it, but my opinion of him and this transfer will not change.

    Is he that reliable?

I know its only media speculation but apparently 'Arry's going to start Gomes as No. 1, so if FREEdel is the (even short term) answer then why not make him No. 1?

The fact is that both of Gomes and Cudicini get injured once or twice a season - and if they're both on the shelf, the only option we have is to give Ben Alnwick a few games in goal, and watch our goal difference depleting with alarming speed as a result.

What IS the problem with Alnwick, when we bought him he was a v. highly rated young keeper - not heard any Bostock/2 Saints rumours about him frittering away his talent by being an ass and yet he's never seemed to get a shot?

Has he really dropped that far down in ability? or was he another pointless buy to shore up other teams?

I doubt he was ever as good as Comolli presumed he was - he'd lost his place in goal at Sunderland before we signed him, after all, whilst the only clubs we've loaned him to that he's even played for were in League One.
