Jackie Stewart maybe? That's about as good as I can think of. Tactically aware, had raw pace when needed, could develop a car, mechanically sympathetic, team player. Can't think of any flaws.
Hmm… thinking aloud here… I'm not comfortable voting for Alonso in this because he is so focussed on beating Hamilton, who I believe has more natural talent than any driver since Jim Clark, and yes, that includes Gilles Villeneuve (Mr. Death Wish) and Senna 'A' version. I'm not comfortable going for Hamilton (although he's still not yet 'complete'). Button? - What can I say? He's not the best qualifier and he's probably not the ultimate quickest, but I seriously put him on a par with Alonso. They are both very consistent and very intelligent about the way they race. Actually, I'm going to give it to Button!

I say Alonso. He has no proper weaknesses, and I think he has gotten over 2007 but the Hamilton fans just dont agree with it, if he didnt then he would have cracked under pressure last year but he didnt. Everyone else has atleast one proper weakness Vettel: Cant overtake, cant race wheel to wheel. Hamilton: Too easily pissed off and cant handle pressure at all Button: Just not fast enough unless the car is perfect Webber: Way too many mistakes and very inconsistant, cant save tyres. Alonso has been known as the most complete driver for some time now, there is a reason why he is called that. The only "weakness" I can think he has is luck. I cant think of much other drivers who have won a race which has been fully wet while driving much faster than everyone else so I cant see why he is bad in the wet, but I will say he isnt the best. PMC: Just stop ****ing arguing in every single thread. Just because someone doesnt agree with you. Massa had many more problems in '08, (Hungary; lost 11 points to Hamilton not by his fault. Fair enough Hamilton lost out on 3) Singapore; Should have easily won the race were it not for Ferrari, lost out another 11 points to Hamilton) Dont even come up with the Spa excuse because Hamilton only lost out on 6 points. And by my calculations: Massa: 97 + 10 (Hungary) + 10 (Singapore) - 2 (Spa) = 115 Hamilton: 98 +3 (Hungary) - 1 (Singapore) + 4 (Spa) = 104 Massa should have won. I know it shouldnt be in this thread but I have to prove him wrong.

Alonso's weakness is still his mental ***ility. See Valencia, Silverstone & his reaction to Petrov at Abu Dabai 2010. He can get distracted by feeling an injustice and should really concentrate on his own racing. 'Luck' is not a weakness! I can't see many times when he has been unlucky recently. Anyway, lets wait for Episode 2 'The others return from the pub and it all gets a bit feisty' in about 3 to 4 hours time............

I would say that Alonso is one of the most mentally strong drivers on the grid, actually I would say he is the most mentally strong driver on the grid. Look at last year after Silverstone when he was miles behind and pretty much everyone wrote his chances off, yet he said he could still win it and went on a immense run and very nearly did win it. Or even look at this year, Ferrari had a very bad start but Alonso never got down about it and instead led and drove the team back up to the front. Granted Alonso gets the red mist sometimes but is that really due to mental ***ility? I would say not. If he everydoes something like his comments after Valencia or his fist waving at Petrov he appologised straight away for his reaction.
It is down to getting flustered and not keeping a cool head. It is something others can also be accused of too, so don't think I am singling him out on this one, its just my repsonse to an earlier post which said he had no flaws at all.
I think Alonso's been a better driver in the last twelve months, and very strong mentally. The Petrov thing doesn't prove otherwise in my opinion, he didn't act rashly during the race it was only an irrational outburst afterwards when he'd just lost the World Championship. Right up until the last lap he kept pushing, he didn't lose his cool and crash out like others might have. Sure it looked petulant, but it didn't really cost him anything, the title had already gone.
The title had only gone as he couldn't mount a challenge to Petrov. If he was getting frustrated in the car then did this impair his driving so he couldn't think of a way to get round Petrov? He never really seemed to mount a challenge. Anyway, I think we go back to the point we made last page that there isn't really a stand-out driver at the moment.
To be fair on Alonso, there has barely been any overtakes on Abu Dhabi ever, and that Renault had great traction and top speed, so there was 0 chance to get by. Everyone always seems to forget that Hamilton couldnt pass the other Renault either.
What I really want is all you lot whining about Alonso-Hamilton and Button, then Schumacher finds some speed in Spa and whacks them all up once and for all.
