The Press can set these stings and claim it is in the public interest.whatever that is, unless it is a euphemism for "selling papers". If they had a suspicion for years that led up to this event then in that same public interest why not take it to the FA with the warnings that they would be carrying on digging.
There could be some benefit to come out of this if they turn the findings over to the FA, but that won't sell papers.
David Jennings gave them all a lesson on "proper" investigative journalism when he kept digging away at FIFA until they fell. He was up front all the time and never wavered in his open approach.

It's a lesser of two evils scenario, as we all know the press are ****s without a noble bone in their body but if they're exposing things that people need to be punished for then they are in the right, just.
For an extreme example look at those guys that pretend to be underage kids and lure in *****s for a meeting only for them to get a shock when it's four burly blokes and the cops instead. It's not exactly the same as the press stings but it proves that sometimes the end justifies the means even if it was dishonest.

These people who are being exposed/about to be exposed have brought it on to themselves.
In the case of Sam and this meeting, he didn't have to go there, he didn't have to tell them anything, he chose to and left himself open.

I think simply because that there are that many stupid fukkers in this Country getting gongs, earning huge salaries for absolutely nothing..

There's a climate of hate in the world and the press fuel it at times.
I too dislike this sort of journalism, however I have to accept that the investigative journalist has by and large done great work in highlighting the shadier side of Public Life.
For example Robert Maxwell would have got away with it for much longer but for Press exposure.
One of my favourite journalists, Andrew Gilligan, did a brilliant exposure on Tony Blair's dodgy Iraq Dossier and lost his job through political pressure.
But he stuck to his story, which now, most see as being true.
The work the Andrew Gilligans of this World do is important.
The sort of scandal mongering that is being condemned here isn't but I can't see how we can have one without the other.

If a yob conned an old lady out of £200, it would be called a criminal offence. If a press guy cons an old man out of £4m, it's called ...what? And WHY?
As Nostalgic said (#23) there is good honest investigative journalism. Bernstein and Woodward will never die in that respect. But then there are also cheap rag-selling scumbags. That's not the same thing, and, in my view, shouldn't be treated as such.
