Sadly that's not the issue, I lived on High Street 15 years ago before social media really took off and it was dead at 6pm from Mon to Thurs then too. The difference when I moved to Leeds was really evident.
Well how did that work if I lived on High Street? It has always been a strangely Hull attitude of everyone just wants to get home asap on a non-school night.
Old town is great for drinking, and getting better all the time. Start in Minerva and work back through the marina and then the other side of Castle St, is my advice. There's something for everyone now - hipster boozers like Head of Steam & Furleys, real ale pubs like Minerva/Lion & Key/Hawkes/Walters, traditional pubs like George/White Harte/Sailmakers, cocktail places like Silvers & that Steinbeck place, and your more youth oriented (I think) slightly ****ter places like Revolution - or whatever it's called now - and Jaz etc. It's improved a lot. A few more nice restaurants and it's sorted. All in close proximity. May I recommend Saturday afternoon drinking as opposed to Saturday night, when the rabble vomits into town.
Old Town huh? Well I've never seen The Deep in real life, only on Google Street View. The Bloody thing is grotesque, and stands on what I knew as Sammy's Point. On the other side of the Old Harbour entrance I see they've tried to transform the old graving dock into a cheap kind of amphitheatre. And where Queen St meets Nelson St, they've put up a red brick building where there used to be a lovely pub full of photos of Humber pilot vessels. As for Prince's Quay ... Victoria Dock has houses on it, Fish Dock has shops on it, Albert Dock is empty, as are King George, Alexanda and Queen Elizabeth, and the Boilermakers Club on Beverley Road is demolished, like most of the Old Town. I hear that the old Trinity House college is gone, just like Hessle shipyard. And posters on here say the Old Town is dead after six on weekday evenings. Don't get me wrong. But what Old Town are people referring to?
Lowgate Scale Lane High Street Market Square North Church Side Princes Dock Street Posterngate The marina in general Plenty of stuff and see and do, old & new.
I haven't a clue what a marina has to do with an Old Town. The original users of Railway Dock wouldn't believe their eyes ... half full with gin palaces that never go anywhere ... and that is easy to explain ... and a few canal boats a.k.a. caravans on the watter. And Princes Dock Street? Opposite that commercial abomination on stilts? What's old about that? If you want to see how to maintain an old urban district, perhaps the easiest thing for you to do is jump on the ferry to Rotterdam and take a taxi ride to Willemstad on Haringvliet, and take a look at the brick dimensions. Or come over my way and see Vestergade in Ærøskøbing. They really shouldn't try to erect new buildings in imitation old style, and even less, build Princes Quay or The Deep in a location that is supposed to be traditional.
Yup, I can, and it will be with a slight smile on my face remembering all the nice old towns I've seen since I left the ****hole I came from. Now why doesn't Polly go put the kettle on and drink something that helps relaxation and eloquent discussion.
