Solve the riddle to unearth a well known sporting personality.

My first's a reverent form of address,
Followed synonymously close, yet muddled,
Alliteratively cackles and chortles-to himself I guess,
Jumping's his game, but his tips befuddled.
 
Hello, Tam, and nice to hear from you. Do I detect:

SIR (respectful/reverential address)
BARNEY (anag. nearby)
CHUCKLES (syn. chortles etc) ?

A purist might wonder if you'd taken the full measure of the man - the wit, the knowledge, the soaring prose cadences; but 'well-known sporting personality' is fair enough - some of us think that Squire Osbaldeston has been reincarnated and strides with us again, across the green Wiltshire turf.

Thanks, Tam. Things could be better and, if the doctors are to be believed, Time's winged bloody chariot is fairly zipping along. Still, can't complain - I'm 83, backed a lot of winners and banged a lot* of blondes, kids are sorted, and I'll go without regret or recrimination.

* Not strictly true: "a few" would be more accurate. Mind how you go.

At 83, you've certainly drawn the Lottery's bonus ball. Having said that, my wife runs a club for old folks and her oldest member has 37 years on me- and fancies marrying another member who's a spritely 92. At 106, he's just incredible but, being currently the only male member among two dozen drooling widows, I'm not sure his elevator goes all the way to the top.
My answer to him is simple... It's the quality of life that counts. Not very convincing, is it? :emoticon-0106-cryin

Well I'm blowed. I thought of Sir Barney but didn't have the intelligence to work it all out. Fooled by the anagram. I only spent 10 mins on it before I went out for the rest of the day. Doubt I would have got it though

Good to hear from you again rainer. I hope I can say that when I'm your age; that's if I make it. Not sure where I'm going to find another couple of blondes though <laugh>
 
STH: hello again. No, I wasn't too chirpy in the first half of 2016 and never got round to completing it. I've got a stack of notes the size of a Biffa refuse truck, though, and another year's worth of available data, so I'll dig it out and have another go. My knowledge of cyberprint-packaging isn't that great, but I remember that Ron offered me some help, so I'll start again with a view to producing something fairly soon after the end of the turf flat season.

Prurient Bystanders: my blonde-banging days ended c.1970 when I met The Redhead who became Frau Rilke (think Rhonda Fleming, but with longer legs and more brains). Stop hanging your wish-fulfilments on me.

Thats no problem. Your wellbeing is far more important than anything racing will ever be Rainer <ok> sounds like quite a portfolio you amassed. Hope the second half of this year is better for you.
