Yes! That's where I got my GCSE's and A'levels, it's closed now. I quite liked it but having now talked to other people who went to other schools it was as rough a school as there is! Made me proud getting through Law school though as one of 7 people out of 120ish in the year who went to university. Also went to Rowlands Gill infants and juniors (Hookergate is up the road in high spen)
And was this not sort of the reason Shirley Porter had to leg it to Cyprus, because she'd been flogging off council houses to yuppies in one of the London boroughs to up the Tory vote?....Bas****s.
That's a fantastic achievement mate, well done. My grandparents lived in Lilac Crescent just up from the cricket club. That's gone now & houses built on it. They play at Crookgate now, just up from the Hobson industrial estate on the golf club road. A lot has changed around those parts. The Travelers Rest is a supermarket now ffs!
Lucky mostly, my parents are fantastic - sadly many parents just didn't really value education, viewed it more as a sort of childcare. My eldest brother has a PhD in Physics and my middle brother got a first in computing (or something to do with computers) and does well. Quite a few of the cricket grounds were built on in the local area, a waste as there's plenty of space between villages! I know Lilac Crescent - the polling cards that get handed out prior to local elections used to be distributed by my mum, me and my brothers (paid for our holidays each year). Gibside and the walk to the monument are still great on nice days, I rarely get up there nowadays though. I used to play in Ryton (we moved to Crawcrook when I was in my teens) and got to paly against the Pratt brothers (for any Durham cricket fans) as Andy played for Greenside (where the pool table cost 20p a game). Happy days. Can't believe you were from one of the other villages, no-one has ever heard of any of these places even in Newcastle etc.
I was born in South Shields, County Durham I haven't moved, but I now live in South Shields, tyne & Wear Do I **** . . . . because of the arsehole councillors that want to call it South tyneside, I live in South Shields, Sunderland (which is how I've referred to it, postally, for many years) I certainly don't live in South tyneside 'Sheels borders Sunderland, so it's next door, which is why anyone from 'Sheels that doesn't support S.A.F.C. (their most local professional team) is a gloryhunting bastard The defectors only started being so when Curly Perm came to manage in this area and formed The Maggots in 1992, mind, which reminds me that when I was at school (from start to finish) I (and all of my mates) knew neebody that supported The Maggots . . . . not a single one Curly Perm did an awful lot of damage in the South Shields/Sunderland region - damage that is, fortunately, though slowly, being repaired
Yeh although I'm not from Washington My mothers family are. The curly per man slole a few glory hunters
I knew a right nutter from South Shields back in the early 80s, he was a ringer for Phil Lynott. He liked a good scrap or ten.
Three young women dressed in burkas walking down my street last night - its Tyne & Wear not Afghanistan ffs.
I'm from Washington and it borders Sundland and gateshead. It has an NE postcode but has city of Sundland on me wheelie bin. Is Nissan in Washington or sundland? Some even say washington is part of sundland! The borders all around the tyne and wear area are weird like. And as someone pointed out, why the south tyneside border goes as far as Whitburn is something i'll never understand.
Washington was in co Durham And full of Sunderland supporters In the 60s I can't remember many if any mags
There's always been loads of mags in wton mate but the curly one did create even more undoubtedly. Same as in penshaw and peterlee etc. There is around a 60/40 split in wton i reckon. Obviously just guesswork. I've lived here for 46 years.
May be all my family and friends in Washington were Sunderland supporters And I didn't realise there was so many mags Although this was in the 60 s
Is he? I don't know. Monty said he was from Sunderland but I was always lead to believe he was from Consett
