One for the "older" chaps on the board. Somehing that has always bugged me is how some places are classed as South Tynside when they are much closer to Sunderland ie Whitburn, Cleadon, Boldon. Are there any lads on here from those parts that were about when they were forcibly labelled Tynesiders by the government boundary changes. what was the general feeling when it happened? Would you welcome a change back or an adoption of new County borders?
Everything south of the Tyne is Durham...everything north is Northumberland. simple....No clue why they changed it in the 1st place
I never understood the whitburn and cleadon thing. I used to go to monkwearmouth comp and both were right next door.
Bugs me whenever I'm through the beach or venture over to South Shields. Don't know why the south tyneside border is so far south
Whitburn S. Tyneside. S Bents Wearside. Not sure where many of the other borders change. Bents park was often a battle ground for monkeyhouse v whitburn. Carnage at times.
Could it have been that that the Tory voters of Whitburn and Cleadon were wasted in Durham, but may have made a difference in another constituency, or am I being overly suspicious?
Yes, it's called gerrymandering. They did it for years in Northern Ireland to keep the Catholic people out of power.
You can get a ferry from South Shields, across the Tyne, to North Shields. Seems to make perfect sense to me why South Shields is classed as South Tyneside. It is on the side of the Tyne.
No arguments with that one. I don't know how it's not classed under Sunderland, as it has a Sunderland postcode. I would say that Boldon is definitely South Tyneide. They talk like Geordies, not Mackems. If you were to class Boldon as Sunderland, then Jarrow would be on the edge of Sunderland, and that doesn't seem right to me.
When I was a kid I lived in a place called Burnopfield. The address was Burnopfield, Newcastle on Tyne, NE16. It's 12 ****ing miles south of Newcastle.
strange that when you drive up to the top of that road between Downhill and Townsend farm you go into south Tyneside/Boldon yet Seaburn is further out but still in Sunderland. Before 1974 the boundries were different. Right Commachio thanks, here is a suprising fact, did anyone of you know Rowan Atkinson (Blackadder) was born in Sunderland hehe.
I went to school in Rowlands Gill! Some friends from Burnopfield - last time I was there it was for my uncles cremation, some years back now though! ps. When the alternative is Gateshead then you cling to being from Newcastle I guess. I'm actually originally from Whitley Bay so I cling to that more
