As part of an 5 man midfield with no striker, as I recall

A masterstroke by our erstwhile manager - WHY play with width when there's no one in the middle if the wide players can get their crosses in???

I know they have changed the loan thing this year, but can we sign out of contract players? If so.... is there an out of contract striker that is worth a punt?

Just found this in the Telegraph, though it doesn't specify which leagues can do this.

But AN keeps trying to fit both him and Wes into the side. Something's got to give when Pritchard is fit again - and the crowd won't be impressed if it's always Wes forced to make way.
Also for certain games we could drop the 4-2-3-1 on occasion and play with one DM allowing more width and creativity further up the pitch?

We did play with a 4-1-4-1 against Brum, Cromer and had Jerome been fit it could have worked. Sadly, it didn't. Marouane Chamakh would give us other options as a striker and as an impact sub. His strength is in link-up play, but he's also an excellent header of the ball if we're chasing a game. Also, unlike McCormack and Rhodes, he wouldn't create problems in the dressing room. For a sign on fee and his wages, he could provide a useful option.

As i could only listen to the match, I also followed it on Whoscored and their man at the match had it as 4-1-4-1 as well.
