QUIET DAY AT SAINTS

Doesn't seem like there will be much going on at St Mary's today.

They have been linked with Sebastien Haller and Cuco Martina could leave for Everton, but that would depend on Southampton finding a replacement.

Otherwise not too much activity.

Never been Martina's greatest fan @ RB, but I just had a horrible vision of him magically transforming into the new Nat Clyne at Everton.

I can't decide whether to be fed up because transfer deadline day will be boring for us or smug because we've done our business and are not running around panic buying anyone who can walk.

By the way what happened to Everton's £100m? <laugh>

I'm slightly disappointed. Without meaning to be negative, I feel like this is the first window in a few years that we have gone backwards, but we also have added Europa league games. Loads of pressure on Boufal and Hojbjerg

Without drawing comparisons with those who have left, I am pleased with the ones we have brought in. Was a bit dubious about Pied, but he looked fine in the Watford game (considering it was his first appearance)....shame to lose him so soon.

I have to admit that I too am a bit bemused by what has happened during the transfer Window..............The board and Koeman when he was manager was indicating we needed a larger squad for Europe. Also hoping to bring players in to strengthen the squad!!!
All we seem to have done is to replace players once again, albeit to date not like for like players. I can't see we have strengthened........do you guys think we have?

Nope, I'm with you.

I totally agree. We were all ambitious at the end of last season - yet realistic too. Most agreed we only needed 2 or 3 additions to build on our success, and have a good crack at the Europa.

We havent done this at all. All we have done is manage to replace proven quality with more gambles. And those 2 or 3 additions have simply not materialised at all.

Even some of the guys on here that defend this board so much have got to acknowledge that this has been a bad summer.

And please, I don't want to hear anyone use the 'but we got some players to renew their contracts' argument. This is a TRANSFER window, not a 'contracts window' ffs.

EDIT: Sorry, just basically repeating what Beddy just said.

I think we're a bit light, esp' now Pied is crocked. Would love to get a forward (not another ruddy attacking midfield player) in today but not that hopeful. It's not just that we are no stronger, most clubs have actually improved on what they had last year. Throw in Europe and it's a big ask.

I am also with you. Boufal for Mane. Pierre for Wanyama. Redmond for Pelle. McCarthy for Stek. Pied for depth, but now out for the season. Have I missed anyone? Transfers out have been replaced but there has been no depth added for our extra six games in Europe (last season we had four games in Europe).

We've replaced Mane with Boufal, Pelle with a coming back Jay and Austin as he was his direcr replacement last January. Wanyama with Bhojberg and added Redmond Pied. I think we have had a good summer.

To Summarise

Mane replaced by Boufal +£20m...pretty happy with that.
Pelle replaced by Redmond....Well if we want a different style of play then I can tolerate that. I like Redmond but worry about him being a focal point.
Hoijberg replacing Big Vic - very much not like-for-like. Looks like a great signing but not a replacement.
McCarthy replacing Stek - fine.
Pied in - happy with this, real shame about the injury but can't blame the board for that.

Looks like a net gain of 1 (unless Martina leaves) and with the excellent addition of signing our main men down to long-term deals. Not enough to be considered as an expanded quad for Europe, particularly with no Academy players knocking on the door.

I feel like I'm the only one truly happy with our transfer window.

We've signed up our key stars to long term deals, we've signed quality players in positions we needed. Don't get the large squad required for Europa ... we have a squad of 24, we're not going to be signing players for backup/Europa only. That's where the kids come in. Plus, we beefed our squad up last summer in preparation for Europe, let's not forget. We've maintained the squad size.

Did we?

Yep. We signed more depth last year ... Juanmi wasn't really in a position we needed to recruit. Ditto Romeu (Clasie had already been signed to replace Morgan). Martina was originally signed as a squad utility player. Caulker was originally signed to add squad depth for Europa (before Gardos got injured). Ramirez came back into the fold to aid the Europa campaign.

We only lost 3 players (Clyne, Morgan, Toby) and signed 6. Add into the fold Ramirez back and an added defender in Caulker, that's 5 players up on "senior" players from the season before.

Fair enough......the key word you have written is replaced. Strengthened????????????????

You can't expect the club to Inprove every season, so the fact we have got our players to sign long term deals and add some young high potential players is encouraging, we are obviously going to have a transition season! Im okay with that, 7 yrs ago i nearly didnt have a club to support.

My only qualm is that i'd like a CB back in to push Fonte and be able to deputise at RB.

Southampton. Won't be letting Isgrove go now. New coach likes him. [HASHTAG]#moveon[/HASHTAG]

It is unlikely that we will be successful in both the league and the Europa and is also unlikely that we will qualify for Europe next season by league position or the Europa. We will be like Liverpool....but probably without getting to the final. All the top clubs will up their game and finish in their usual positions IMO. So people should be prepared for that...I'm hoping for top 8 and getting past the group stage in the Europa....that would be a good season. I don't believe one season like that will lead to inevitable decline. We are a good, well run team....some seasons will be good (like last season), an occasional one may be very good, and some will be mid-table. That is the way for all teams. The important thing is to keep going, maintain standards and one day, one day.....
