Actually, I was never a big fan of he. I thought we invested too much time, energy & money on him. But, some might say, as my post says.....

We must not forget that Gardos is back in full training.

Your post came across to me as contrary to the post saying three managers having not played Reed... Perhaps I misunderstood.

Agree with this DTLW, and some may have forgotten/underestimated the value in these, but I'm not sure about your calculations....
I agree Forster will have a total cost of c. £20m over the five year period, but we would have had him in for some of that cost based on his old contract also.

Therefore it makes more sense (unless anybody can be bothered doing each deal individually and knows the exact salaries) to say it'll work out roughly as:
An average of £25k p.w. INCREASE in wages x 52 weeks x average 4 years contract length x 8 players = c. £41.6m for all the players over a 4 year spell (or circa £10.4m additional costs per year).

If I'm wrong with the average £25k p.w. increase part, each additional £5k above that adds in £8.32m total, or £2.1m per year.

On Gardos, I don't wish to put the guy down and he provides squad depth but when fit he was 4th choice behind Yoshida and is just returning from a year out injured so I'd be surprised if he's suddenly going to be pushing Fonte for a starting place, which is what we could do with.

    Nice summary saintly!!
Transfermarkt has it as £64.5m received, and £40.1m spent (http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-southampton/transfers/verein/180/saison_id/2016), but as discussed above at a guess we've committed to roughly an additional £10.4m per year wages each year for the next 4 years so I wouldn't be surprised as some have suggested to see one just one more AM/W and maybe a season long loan for a RB if we sell Martina.

Agree with this Puck. I'd like the following, but can't quite see us getting it all:
    1) One more AM/W.
    2) Season long loan to replace Martina. Don't really like the idea of Martina playing his last year with his head somewhere in Merseyside.
    3) A Rob Holding-esque young CB to challenge Fonte over the next year/two.

Maybe we just have confidence in Jack Stephens if required before Gardos comes back?

I'm already jealous of whoever gets him. Class, class player, needs a stint away from arsenal's medical team.

Put in a good word for us DTLW!

He'd fit into our diamond quite well on the left hand side.

Wenger and Puel go back a long way.

Shall I start up the Saints Jack! thread now or tomorrow?

Arbeloa is available on a free still after being released by Real Madrid.
I think the Martina deal is excellent business for us, even if it's comparative loose change. There must be a right back available who can push Cedric long term.
I'd like Domenico Berardi from Sassuolo as an additional attacking option, but I think he might be subject to a Juventus buy back
