    No ****ing idea - is the Grand Mere State Park(the flagpole) more or less than just over 6 miles away from the observer ?

    d=1.23 x root (h)...}
    please log in to view this image
    (from wiki article above)
    d = 1.23 x sq. root 6' = 1.23 x 2.45 = 3.01 miles
    X 2 because the flag pole is 6' = 2 X 3,01 = 6.02 miles.

    See post #261.
    Not too far off, mental arithmetic not my strong point.

    You need to be careful here because the curvature of the earth is not the only factor. As the a sight line is well below 13 feet (4 m) above the water, the effects of atmospheric refraction come into play.

    The density of air in the atmosphere decreases with height above the Earth's surface so all light rays travelling nearly horizontally bend downward. If the measurement is close enough to the surface, light rays can curve downward at a rate equal to the mean curvature of the Earth's surface. In this case, the two effects of assumed curvature and refraction could cancel each other out and the Earth will appear flat in optical experiments. This will be aided by a temperature inversion in the atmosphere with temperature increasing with altitude above the lake.

    I remember interviews when they test **** like this by interchanging words like 'I have loads of friends' or 'I have many friends'. I didn't get the job as I have neither :)

    Was John F Kennedy shot by William Greer? Certainly looks like it in the footage...

    Also, did anybody watch the moon landing - fake or not? Documentary on Channel 5? I don't usually subscribe to it as I do like to think that we as a species accomplished that feat, it''s one of the reasons I became an astronomer, but it was worth it to see one of the interviewees get clocked by Buzz Aldrin.

    Anything on mainstream is tainted imo. We have to think what JFK's policy's were. One was to stop the Federal Reserve issuing cash and let the government issue it. 'Green backs' I think they were called. People more powerful than the govt. didn't like this.
