Absolutely right. 4 years ago, Jade Jones did exactly that, and I think she backed off in the dying seconds of her 2016 fight. Thinking all the time. Despite that, I felt sorry for the lad. He was heartbroken.
Yes, I don't think they quite realised how prolific we'd produce these multi-medal winning athletes. Still, it's better to have a knighthood/damehood for an iconic athlete than for a civil servant.
BTW, don't think I've asked this before, but who are the second string commentators on BBC Four.? We appear to have an Aussie amongst them. They make a change from the usual Foster/Cram/Cotter, etc... because they appear to have very little national bias. If you haven't heard them catch them here. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/live/olympics/36817939
Well that was the most awful 1500m ever seen. 3.50 for the winner. The Kenyans ran a shocking race to allow the American to win in a sprint finish. Why or why didn't they run the finish out of these guys at the beginning.
I still cannot get over how badly the 1500m was run. The authorities should demand a rerun for cheating the general public out of a race. A good county runner could get 3.50 in a race. All of them are capable of running sub 3.40 and in some instances near 3.30. Just a shocking 1500m race for men!! This is the second consecutive Olympics where this has happened and the only way around this would be to declare the race null and void if the winning time is outside 3.40!!!
A good 800m race for the ladies and I think all ran sub 2 minutes. Lynsey Sharp around in 1.57. Fantastic for her!! Thank you for a great race. You certainly showed the 1500m men up big time for that disgrace!!
This Olympic quadrennial has been a triumph for Canada. Despite a small population, and meagre funding, we have managed to top our total of 12 four years ago. Few countries can match the number of bronze medals we have earned; we stand a chance of edging out Germany and France in that department, depending on the results of the last day and change of the competition. We're number three! We're number three!
This looks like a good 5000m race with the Ethiopians taking it out quickly and stretching the field. Mo Farah is in close contention.
Gold for Spain in the women's high jump through Ruth Beitia who is 37. See it is never too late!! The Spanish commentators are going nuts!!
I see Walkden got a bronze....well done to her. So one gold, one silver and one bronze in taekwondo....good return for the sport.
One of the three Germans in the Men's Javelin has just knocked out my boy from the gold medal position. Mind you a throw of over 90m deserves gold!! That is unusual. A Kenyan second and a Trini 3rd by the name of Walcott. Could he be related to Theo?
One of my favourite track events is taking place, the 4*400 relays. USA should take gold in the ladies. This could be the last time that we see the great Allyson Felix, who has been a true ambassador for the sport!! Just finished and the only teams in it were the USA and Jamaica. A 6 second gap between USA and GB in 3rd!!
A huge chunk of the Russian team getting thrown out is probably upping everyone's medal counts. But then again, since they were cheating on a massive scale the athletes are getting what they deserve. I think that despite WADA and IOC and every governing athletic body's incompetence, the games are much cleaner. The US is the dominant country now. And while the US most likely still cheats in a higher proportion to other countries, I don't think it's to the same ridiculous level we did pre-2008.
