Thinking of replacing the motor for something slightly better. Currently I have a 2004 passat estate 1.9tdi. Requirements are:
Estate
Up to £7k

I'm favouring an audi A4/6 estate, perhaps the 2.0tdi 170bhp. Also quite like some volvos.

What's better, bit older with less mileage or newer with more?

Any input gratefully received. Cheers in advance.
 
Anything with less mileage is better providing it isn't a category 2 write off repair job.
Often, cars that have been affected by water etc we be flogged off in other areas or countries.
Here in Oz, we do a REVS check to find its history .
Best advice - Take someone who knows what to look for, with you.
The interior area of the drivers seat and foot area is normally a good indicator as to how it's been treated.

I'm looking to get an estate soon as I need a more family friendly car now, been looking at 3 series BMW and Sokda Octavia, can't go wrong with either and if you're willing to go a little higher on mileage and age ie 2006-2010
70k+ miles then they would fit in your price range.

I've got a Hyndai I30 which is fantastic to drive and very good value. The larger version, the I40, is an estate and could get you a lot more for your dough than other brands.

I drive an A6 estate and its a pleasure to drive at cruising speeds, but the 2.0 litre engine is completely gutless when trying to pull away at junctions etc.

You could get a 50k mile 2006 Skoda Octavia 2.0T FSI vRS for about £6k from an approved dealer.

As this is the same as a Golf GTI from the same period (MK V Golf I think, one of my favourites) stretched out into an estate at will be great fun to drive. Plenty of power.

(However this info comes from 2014, some may be totally wrong). Having looked it up I reckon you could get a 2008/9 one for £7k.

Mileage is still pretty important, 150k is very high even for a well looked after car, I personally wouldn't touch one with that on the clock but that's me. It's pot luck whether things start going expensively wrong!

I know you're not all here to sort out my life, but seeing as you mostly have erm... wisdom on your side....
The audi in the garage here in Bristol is an 08 plate, 2.0tdi, s line (nice spec), full audi service history, pristine condition, but with 150,000 miles.
The seller says mileage is nothing if the car has been properly looked after, not that I'd normally go for sales talk, but he is an acquaintance of the bloke I'm contracting to here at the moment, so I think there is trust.
He had it for sale at £5k, but has said I could have it for 3k plus my passat (worth about 1k in the trade). Potentially a good deal?

The other concern is about diesels. Are we going to start being hit hard for using them, in London particularly. No definite conclusions, from what I've read. Does anyone know more?
 
I've liked all of your responses, because it's the right thing to do. Except Stan's decline of my car share offer. Think that's a bit unfair.

I didn't get where I am today* by accepting dodgy car share offers.
