The closest Sunderland have got to Europe recently is when the volcanic cloud settled there after some strong winds. Or was that just smog from down the coast??
In terms of European competitions? Anglo Italian Cup, Intertoto Cup, 7 seasons in the UEFA Cup, 2 seasons in the Champions League. Not much I know but over the same 40 years, certainly more than Sunderland.

Not really, i would much rather play in the Champions League against Barcelona, Inter ect then celebrate winning a cup for a day
Don't you know, nothing pre-1973 matters. Except for October 31st 2010. That doesnt matter at all. Oh and one day in 1909 matters far more anyway.
Also they go on all about what we've done since we last won a major trophy but fail to mention what they've done since thier last triumph in '73. I think we all know why that is
