If we can't defend then we have to out score our opposition. The Everton fans I know saw some great football matches last season. The only thing that spoilt it were the results.

If Martinez does come at least Hernandez will be happy, he can understand the manager for the first time.

Interesting that most people think Bruce is a terrible Premier League manager.

Why are people intent on ignoring Cups?

Using statistics to prove who is best manager is pointless. All statistics and be manipulated or read, for example
95% of people with XXX cancer will be cured and 100,000 people a year will get it - sounds good odds
    Or
5000 people will die of XXX cancer this year (almost 100) per week - sound horific

In football a range of stuff will influence results, strength of other teams in league, form of those teams when they play, injuries ect etc. ......

Does Martinez set his teams up well - yes
Does he have premiership experience - yes
Has he built teams on relatively low budget - yes
Does he have good connections at other top clubs - yes

More importantly, would any other manager with his credentials be willing to come in to our club in its current state?

When looking at a managers win percentage at a club, it's almost always based on league games only.

The fact Martinez actually won major silverware is rather significant I would think.

Statistics mean nothing to the individual. Martinez would be a pretty good shout given our current predicament, however I doubt he'd take it. Not without Premier League level backing. We don't have the basic quality that Everton had when they tried to do things on the cheap.

I'm sure it is, but that's got nothing to do with how a managers win rate is normally measured.

You cannot consider cups because a manger will often decide that they're quite unimportant. Our cup run happened with a weaker team because the manager has to protect the 'better' players. He decides who his better players are for the league competition so comparing only stats for that competition is the only fair way.

Whomever it is that's taken Salford City up through the divisions. Him.

I'm sure Big Billy Heath would've loved a crack at it, but money talks and he's on a lucrative deal at Halifax Town.

Fair enough. I don't think less than 2 seasons is enough time to judge Bruce's impact at Wigan anyhow. There's two sides to the coin: Every side he's managed has gone backwards after he left:

    A) "Well look at how well he managed them, he had them pushing high up the table without much going for them!"
    B) "Well look how poorly he set that club up, he was able to throw money at the issues for short term solutions, but it all fell apart pretty quickly."

I do agree I'd tend towards the former, but I don't think the fact Martinez didn't do as well at Wigan should be the decisive factor when our other options are far more limited.

Imagine if Bruce had actually won the Cup, we wouldn't be just seeing tears on here we'd have to inform the Samaritans

For sure, and we were very close to winning it. For all his supposed defensive frailties, not only did Martinez win the cup, he did so with a clean sheet. A touch ironic given the general opinions of the two. Bruce loses in a 3-2 goal-fest, and Martinez wins the dour smash-and-grab 1-0. <laugh>

It's all fine margins, and I suppose underlines why looking at a win % isn't the be all and end all.

What was Ranieri's win % over the last 5 years before joining Leicester?

EDIT: Just checked - ignore that question! <laugh>

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this but Sky reported earlier (after the kit reveal) that we have a shortlist of 5 potential managers.
The good news is that neither Warnock nor Evans are on it! :D

They didn't go as far as confirming who is on it unfortunately.
They indicated that Martinez was a probable but seems we already know that.

We want to appoint a head coach not a manager. <doh>

Unless we're appointing someone with real chops to be the Director of Football, I don't like the sound of that.. sounds like Ehab picking transfer targets, in direct contrast to how his Dad ran things.
