At least 45,000 people have been rounded up, sacked or suspended from their jobs by Turkey's government in the wake of last week's failed coup.

The purge of those deemed less than loyal to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan widened on Tuesday to include teachers, university deans and the media.

The government says they are allied to US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who denies claims he directed the uprising.

PM Binali Yildirim said the preacher led a "terrorist organisation".

"We will dig them up by their roots," he told parliament.

15,200 teachers and other education staff had been sacked
  • 1,577 university deans were ordered to resign
  • 8,777 interior ministry workers were dismissed
  • 1,500 staff in the finance ministry had been fired
  • 257 people working in the prime minister's office were sacked
thatsc a lot of people from his own staff
When I learnt history at school I'm sure this was called a DICTATORSHIP, not a DEMOCRACY, This man has very sinister plans for the future and by the time the west realises it it will be too late.

I have a Turkish student.they believe that the coup was completely staged by Erdogan...as a method to take total power. The grunt soldiers who were threatened with death if they didn't obey their commanders who staged the coup are now being shot.
Academics, teachers, lawyers and judges are being arrested. Democracy is over now.
So for all you Brexit people...Good news Turkey will never join the EU now...

Erdogan has declared a three month state of emergency. I wonder what he will implement during this period?

Surely the Brexit people are not bothered anyway. We are coming out?

I think the west does realise it but thinks the alternatives for Turkey are worse, or that they are powerless to do anything about it.

60,000 sacked or detained now. Erdogan has declared a 3 month emergency which gives him the ability to make laws without reference to parliament, expanded detention powers and increased censorship of the media. He even said that 'this is to defend democracy and civil liberties'.

This surely goes to prove that if you are to launch a military coup you need to be certain that it will succeed

Turkey is not Europe. Europe ends at Greece. After Greece, it is Asia/Middle East.

I had a Turkish passenger in my car a few months ago and he assured me Erdogan was worse than Hilter. Looks like he wasn't far wrong.

Part of Turkey is indeed Europe, and it borders Bulgaria. Get out your A to Z
A very small part. At least 95% of the country is physically in Asia and the whole place has an Asian feel to it rather than a European one. I don't need to get out my A to Z, I have crossed the Bhosperous myself on a number of occasions and I am well aware that the river is the border between the two continents. For your information, Turkey has a border with both Bulgaria and Greece. Not only Bulgaria.

River <doh>

Erdogan is popular with the, for want of a better word, backward parts of Turkey. With the educated, westernised people, he's hated.

It's Brexit-esque.

Yes, the Bhosperous River is the border between Asia and Europe. One side of the river in Istanbul is Europe and when you cross the bridge, you enter Asia.

Its a bit like that river that separates Gibraltar (Europe) from Africa, I think its called the Mediterranean River ! :emoticon-0102-bigsm
