I'm starting to think that this is all some clever ruse to get people more engaged with politics, using incompetence as a means to stoke interest in politics and get some new blood in the door. I'm staggered by the amount of fawning there has been over the appointment of a education sectary who went to a comprehensive school...I'm sure the 5 years experience when she was 11-16 years old makes her ideal for the post!!! These are certainly strange and interesting political times!
Mrs May may well be playing a long game. If so, she's started well... - "Unify" your party by giving high profile roles to Brexiteers. She has to, in order to win votes in Parliament - Ask them to do the jobs that follow from Brexit, Foreign Relations, New Development of International Trade, Brexit negotiations. - Watch them cock it up thus: - Upset other countries so they don't want to deal with us - Fail to get great new trade deal with non-EU countries - Fail to get the magic Brexit deal with the EU - Fire them for incompetence, sideline them forever and appoint your own people to the great relief of the general public. Just a theory.
And you claim not to be a cynic! If this really is the game it will piss me off hugely as it becomes apparent, more dicking around with real lives for party political gain. Plus it could backfire spectacularly, she is accountable for the appointments and their performance. I think Davies will come out best he has already sacrificed his career on principle more than once and I always have time for a libertarian, even right wing ones. Fox and Johnson should be told to operate on a 'do no harm' basis at all times. As I said above I will be amazed if Johnson lasts two years, some self inflicted wound will do for him, hopefully permanently.
Stranger things have happened, that's for sure. I certainly wouldn't rule out a point in the future when the PM announces that there is not an exit deal available that's in the best interests of Britain.
I agree on Johnson, but not as animated over Fox as you are. Davis (not 'e', looked it up) is a decent and competent individual, so looking forward to his contribution in all this. After his response to Cameron's 'hug a hoody' comments I'm looking forward to him kicking BoJo in the testicles. Incidentally, now we have a cabinet with May and Hammond in it, is there any room for a Clarkson?
Did I? I'm quite happy to be a cynic as long as it's understood that being a cynic is part of being a realist... Reality makes you cynical when it comes to politics and self interest. I think Davis is competent, too. Hoping for good things from him. Fox (and Patel) and Johnson probably won't cut it, but I'd be very happy to be wrong - I want this government team to succeed and do a good job for us all.
My thing with Fox, as I think I elaborated way back on this thread (how come I can remember **** like this but not where I left my keys, or that my children do not share the same name as my dog?) is that he has lived exclusively off taxpayers money for his entire career, and been educated at taxpayers expense, but he is also anti public sector. He is also anti abortion and same sex marriage, by (my) extension anti libertarian. Plus his evident corruption, which any person with a conscience would have taken as an instant cue to resign permanently. Finally I think you will find he is a mega poodle to the US, makes Blair look like a stern critic. Perhaps we could dig up Alan Clark, he was Kenneth Clark's son. And he would draw the spotlight from Johnson.
Your derision of a 5 year comprehensive school education is pathetic, I left Wren after 5 years and it didn't do me any harm, in fact I'm sure I've done a lot better than you.

In my experience (and I've actually met Theresa May several times, as she's my local MP) she's not the cynical type. Any harm to those through incompetence in the job they accepted would be entirely coincidental. FWIW, my take is that she's a sensible, genuine person, who cares and who does her best whatever job she's in. And that means taking decisions that are wholly unpopular at times, if those decisions are the right ones to take. She won't suffer fools (Boris notwithstanding) and the cabinet she's put together generally reflects that.
Wasn't quite the point I was making - a comprehensive education is certainly not something I would deride - I have one. It was more the point that simply going to school hardly makes you an expert in education as the press seem to be suggesting.
