I'm going to assume a Windows PC or Android. If it's a Mac or iPhone you're on your own. You paid enough for the thing.

You need to clear your search history periodically [like maybe set it to automatically clear every time you close down your browser] or install an add-on [extremely easy indeed with the Firefox browser. If you don't have, my advice is to get it] which almost totally eliminates your presence on the Net. Ghostery is my recommendation [moving like a ghost, yeah.?] Also, while you're at it, install a good ad-blocker, for the icing on the cake [Adblocker Plus is ideal].

Download the latest FREE [never ever pay for this stuff] version of CCleaner, install and run it.. First time it might take a while. Do it once a week or month and it won't take above a minute.

    OK, that was preventative.

For your situation download and install FREE Malwarebytes. [remember, never ever pay] Update the definitions on it and run it. It will take ages if you allow it to run through your whole system. If it was me seeing your system I could make it a lot less time, but I'm not. So let it run. If you see a place where it says enable scanning of rootkits, enable it. It will almost certainly identify malware. Uninstall it, if you wish afterwards, as you'll probably not need it again if you take the preventative measures advised above.

A word or two on taking my advice. I'm often asked about problems with computers, PCs, Linux and Macs [and nowadays Android and iPhone Smartphones as they are computers anyway]. I used to get cheesed off when I found that the person continued to have the problem because they didn't act on my advice. Nowadays, I don't give a toss. Apparently we as a country don't listen to experts [see what I did there.?], so good luck with your malware problem.

Tbh, I used Google Chrome for a few months several years back until I realised that you actually become an unpaid [and in my case, unwilling] employee of Google against yourself. Sure it feels good in use, it's meant to so that you choose it. In truth it gathers so much information on you it's probably illegally infringing your privacy rights.

Google as a search engine is probably without peer overall, though some would disagree. But I wouldn't touch Google Chrome with a barge pole and I will only use the Google search engine with the preventatives mentioned in my original advise post. One of the general misconceptions is that you must use the Chrome browser to use the Google search engine. Nothing could be further from the truth. Indeed [Mozilla] Firefox uses Google as its default search engine. It also uses BIng, Amazon, Chambers, DuckDuckGo [Linux], Ebay, Twitter, Wikipedia. It'll even use Yahoo, which is the Typhoid Mary of all search engines, if you're silly enough to let it, which I'm not. Firefox is not the best on Smartphone, in my opinion, being a little unwieldy on anything older than a Samsung S4. However, there are several browsers other than Chrome which are just as good and they won't spy on you quite as much. Keeping yourself logged out of any accounts like Fleecebook, Google Plus, Twitter, Spotify, etc... until you definitely want to be logged in, is also a very good habit to acquire on any hardware, especially a Smartphone.

I always use Opera. I only use firefox or Chrome if a website doesn't like Opera or if I have printing problems (ebay order summarys etc) in Opera.

You can then use private window (incognito in chrome?) which will let you see articles in the telegraph or spectator without knowing you've reached your "free limit" etc.

As for looking after my PC (I know you;re on a phone) I use spybot immunise every couple of weeks and run a full scan monthly, followed by malwarebytesfree after to pick anything else up. I use avastfree antivirus and I use comodo firewall (without all the other stuff it wants you to add, just the firewall)

ccleaner is good. I use it regularly.

You can also use something like HTTPSeverywhere which when turned on encrypts your connection as if every site you visited was a secure site (https) and I also have Hola which I don't use much but it is a VPN and enables me to change to a different country to watch certain youtube videos that they won't let you watch in the UK etc :)
