Its clear the system is broken. England under perform, the manager resigns and the FA wheel out there trusted panel to create a shortlist of super coaches to take on the hot seat to lead England on to glory.......clearly this has failed more than once. Alternatively why not find a panel of people who know something about football, open the job up to an application process to coaches or managers who actually want the job. Of course they must possess relevant qualifications and/or experience, allow them to submit a plan to the panel of how they would take England forward and then interview the outstanding candidates and create a shortlist just like any normal job. England need to regain their passion, their pride and their respect and it starts at the the top with the FA.
Agreed, I lost my England mojo a long time back, been missing since 96. I feel reigned to us not turning up to tournaments these days!
Why not have "England's Next Manager" every Friday night on Dave? Each week Simon Cowell and a panel including Carlton Palmer, Louis Spence and Bella Emberg could put manager hopefuls through a series of challenges such as pronouncing their Rs, talking in pseudo Dutch, doing secret coaching deals with Arabs, shagging Ulrika Jonsson and breaking up card schools.
I've seen in the press that the FA are to speak to former players etc about what they should do with names like Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard and Alan Shearer all bandied about as potential candidates to help find the next manager and fix things. What worries me is that this is just an old boys club of players who have also failed at tournaments. The speculation around bringing in Jurgen Klinsmann is much more exciting, when Germany had a failure at a major tournament Klinsmann was brought in and restructured the way the national team work and they've been reaping the benefits ever since. I think the England set up would benefit much more from an outsiders view of things rather than the same old faces who will just yearn back to the good old days of Terry Venables and Glenn Hoddle!
So Booby Charlton, Geoff Hurst and the other survivors of 66 should be consulted as our only ever winners?
You've nailed it! Make Simon Cowell the manager, they can play in high-waisted pantaloons to bring back memories of when we gave the world our game. They would then have to sing to the fans at the end of the game and the worst one would be fed to three real lions...
I see your point and sure asking players and ex-players that are actually able to string a sentence together can have its merits but I think that by asking people who's main experience in international football is as part of the very teams that have failed they run the risk of making the same old mistakes. Whatever happens, I yearn for the day that the FA and England can look for a new manager without some half wit suggesting Harry F***ing Redknapp.....
Apparently the FA have consulted Redknapp 'but he is not thought to be a candidate'. I wonder how much he will invoice them for for his 'advice'.
The irony of voting to leave the EU and then appointing a German as the English national coach would be too much! Speaking of which, did any of the red tops have "Gerexit" as a headline?
Struth...with his invaluable international experience managing Jordan earlier this year he's certainly the man to speak to... Maybe they just did it in the hope that by letting him have a say he might bugger off and not keep talking about it - "we'll let the old boy have his say that'll keep him happy"
