So now we wait for 150,000 mainly well off mainly over 50 year old Tory members to decide who will be PM. That's what you get for voting against 'elites' in a referendum. If I were the Tories I would say that May has the overwhelming support of MPs, skip the members vote and get her to call a snap general election to get a real mandate. Especially as Labour are as usual imploding and UKIP are leaderless. Get it done and get on with this Brexit stuff. They won't do it though, we have an addiction the faux democracy now.
May is a safe bet but as isaid before quite a few members like AL. Remember 60% of Tory members voted Brexit so AL has a good chance. They have tried to rubbish her unsuccessfully this week but that backfired. By the way not all Tory members are over 50. They actually have a good youth firm.
Andrea Leadsom says criticism of her CV is 'ridiculous', and she didn't have to put up with this nonsense when she was an astronaut. ( Joke is credited to the 'Have I Got News For You' on Twitter. )
The one person who tried to 'rubbish' her was Gove's campaign manager. Theresa May has not done that - she's spoken of her experience in Government - something that even Leadsome couldn't fit into her CV - and at a time when we need someone capable of doing the job at the helm, May is the obvious - in fact the only - sensible choice. One aside - should we not be discussing this on the Politics thread, and not the EU referendum one?
Perhaps this thread should be merged with the Politics thread? I'm hoping Leadsome wins for the comedy value. Meanwhile 120,000 people have joined the Labour party in the last week - not so many short of the entire Tory membership that will elect a Prime Minister.
I think we need a leader to unite the Labour and Conservative parties, as most of the backbenchers are in complete agreement over many things anyway.
Where will we get our entertainment from if he's voted out?... It really is the Tom & Jerry show at present with Labour...
The Labour party is going to have to split. Corbyn should stand his ground and make the Blairites go elsewhere. Anyway, there'll be plenty of entertainment from the Tories if Leadsome wins.
I looked at joining but they have closed the £3 membership loophole. Now someone like me has to pay a monthly subscription and it would be even more dishonest of me to join because I would have no intention of doing it other than to get a vote in the leadership election. I will be an amused bystander.
Where do the bees go in winter? **** knows if Alan Johnson isn't interested. Let's see who has the minerals to stand in what will doubtless be a walkover for Corbyn, as all the rest of the people in the country who have any sympathy for him appear to have joined the party in the last couple of weeks. Time for the party to split.
Yes, Labour should split, the sooner the better - the parliamentary party don't represent the membership. There seems to be a young, radical, energised constituency out there. They need a voice.
Some Tories saying their leadership selection process should be speeded up. At the moment they aren't even sending ballot papers to members until 15 August. Originally result was expected 2 September, but now put back to 9 September. Why? Because Dave wants to hang around as PM long enough to attend a final G6 on 4 September in China with his mates, especially Obama who will also be attending his last one. Even though all he will be able to say is 'that will be for my successor to decide'. What a spectacularly selfish, arrogant, thoughtless and stupid twat he is. Pushes us into a lake of **** and now thinks it's funny to hold our heads under for a bit. Apparently the whole selection thing was strung out because so many Tories will be on holiday for all of August, in their gites and villas, while Toby and Jocasta frolic in the pool. Ever get the feeling you've been cheated? STOP PRESS: the Tory Party central membership list is not comprehensive, accurate or up to date. They are trying to clean it up over the next few weeks. But apparently they can vote online! But obviously not when they are on holiday.
61% of Tory members are over 60. 17% are under 40, with a massive 6% under 24. https://www.psa.ac.uk/insight-plus/members-only-views-conservative-party’s-rank-and-file
Not sure if this fits here or not, but posting it here because I can only see it being resolved politically now. The killings of two black men in the US were swiftly followed by the shooting of eleven police officers in Dallas, of which five (so far) have died. The police were protecting the participants of a March of protest. People are throwing hashtags around like crazy. If Trump gets in, there will be far more of this. If Hilary wins, I'm not sure it will get better. And yet nobody will outlaw gun ownership. It's as if the people of that so called 'civilised' nation feel that no life is important. No nation needs an armed civilian population...
12 police officers and two civilians shot . In Texas you are allowed to openly carry semi-automatic rifles. Today there will be more protest over the deaths of the two black men killed by Police Officers, but I doubt there will be protests about the 12 police shot. So far this year over 2000 people have been shot in Chicago almost all black on black. No protests there either. I love living in this country but this is effing crazy!
