Off Topic EU deabte. Which way are you voting ?

Pretty much why I gave up voting for a while years ago.

I actually voted for the Monster Raving Loony party once because I felt they had the best policy I'd heard. They said that if they were elected they'd launch an immediate enquiry into why there was only one Monopolies Commission! Brilliant!....

 

Took three minutes of scrolling through posts a couple of days after the referendum. Shouldn't be hard to find others similar:

Tbf this is a valid point.

But seeing as this is an advisory referendum iirc how would you feel if @Smirnoffpriest and others like him petitioned their MP to vote differently when it goes to parliament? I personally think THIS is where the Remainers efforts should be focused on if they still believe passionately enough about their cause.

Btw I accept I've not researched if it's going to go to parliament for a vote or not.

 

Of course they can raise the issue with their MP. 99% of MPs will tell them that they respect the vote as will the vast majority of the British people. I would have thought if this was a concern of anybody they would have raised it before the referendum vote. As it is, they seem to be making an issue of it because they lost.

 

Sorry, of course, let me come to it differently.

The ideology and approach of Corbyn is, according to the PLP, not considered to be a basis for being elected to power. They believe it is better to persuade him to stand down or depose him so their ambition can have it's way (far from certain). They do this despite knowing that a massive element of their grassroots support strongly support him and his unabashed stance.

When is ambition bigger or more important than principl and political and philosophical integrity?

When does someone say **** it, go away and form a new party of naked ambition and leave a Labour Party that is returning to it's core values?

When is an issue big enough to split a political party?

Any better?

 

The trouble with centerist politics is it breeds extremism under the surface. We really had **** all choice between New Labour and the Tories at one point. You could just about slide a piece of paper between their policies. When that happens democracy turns to **** and arseholes like the BNP and Farage get given a pedestal of unwarranted respectability.

I think someone from a main political party setting an agenda around anti-austerity and renationalisation might be refreshing.

It may have a democratic essence, but it is hugely crass. If we apply that thinking to all of our democratic process where would it end. No serious democrat would defend it unless real and damaging fault could be found and it can't. I'm taking my ball home now, **** you!

I think it's a little more interesting than that. The tricky situation that's been thrown up is that while the referendum was rightly about the total vote, it wasnt reported through constituencies. For example Birmingham was reported as a whole city. Now imagine that an MP who was on the remain side has a majority of his constituency petitioning him and pressuring him to vote to remain? For this reason I don't think it will be as simple as you suggest. But more importantly, this is where the likes of Smirnoff and the Remain campaign can still use due democratic process through public opinion (if they have it in their constituency) to still effect the parliamentary vote (if there's going to be one?)

 

If you dont like it, maybe you should go live in another country, as it seems we little Englanders offend you, but I guess our benefits don't.

So, to someone who was born in this country, you said maybe he should consider leaving if he wasn't prepared to accept the little Englander attitude but you suspected he did like the benefits the country (his country) offered.

I dont see why the MPs constituency has anything to do with the issue. Parliament decided to have a referendum so the people can decide on the issue and MPs should accept that.

 

Totally agree, but I would add that he was presented with a hugely unexpected opportunity to be heard, to be him, to draw admiration and abuse. He quite rightly took it with both hands; good for him. And I am not a supporter of most of his opinion, but I don't believe life is about absolutes. I wish him well.

Are they going to debate or vote on it in parliament? I don't know, but I'm sure I've heard it called an advisory referendum. Some calm clarity on this would help.
