His contract was up after the Euros - not many expected it to be 10 minutes afterwards, though?

He's done OK with the under 21s. Who would you propose ahead of him?

Christ knows what the score would have been if England had played Waitrose.

Phil McNulty's verdict on the England players last night. Makes pretty grim reading -
    Joe Hart (goalkeeper) 4
Dreadful tournament summed up by his error for Iceland's winner. Overheated again in the tunnel before kick-off. Made a couple of decent saves but damage done.
    Kyle Walker (right-back) 4
His worst night of what had been a good tournament. Recalled but was caught out for first goal and wasted any attacking positions.
    Danny Rose (left-back) 4
No shortage of effort but still looks short of international class.
    Chris Smalling (centre-back) 4
Uncertain under physical pressure from Iceland's attackers. Never looked totally settled.
    Gary Cahill (centre-back) 4
Same as Smalling and the rest of England's team. Nervous, unsettled, poor.
    Eric Dier (midfield) 4
Had a good tournament and one of just four players to start all four games, but was way off the pace on Monday. Taken off at half-time but will come again.
    Dele Alli (midfield) 4
Struggled to make any sort of impact on this game - and indeed Euro 2016.
    Wayne Rooney (midfield) 4
Another who had played well but this might just have been his worst England performance. Never seen so many passes go astray in the second half.
    Raheem Sterling (forward) 4
Surprisingly recalled despite doubts about his confidence. Won a penalty but his confidence looks shot. Substituted.
    Harry Kane (forward) 4
Complete nightmare. Missed a good headed chance in the second half and took a collection of the worst free-kicks and set-pieces seen at this level.
    Daniel Sturridge (forward) 4
Busy early on playing on the right of the front three but completely wasted out there. Faded along with everyone else.

    Substitutes
Jack Wilshere (for Dier 45 minutes) 4

Nowhere near fit enough to be taken to this tournament and could not put his imprint on the game.
Jamie Vardy (for Sterling 59 minutes) 4
Plenty of pace and energy but by then the game's pattern was set.
Marcus Rashford (for Rooney 86 minutes) No rating
Almost a contender for England's man of the match with his running and endeavour…in his four minutes..

At least Woy has resigned and now the FA HAS to pick a manager who can motivate the team - Michael O'Neill anyone????

Some of those 4's are a bit generous. Rooney, Sturridge, Hart, Sterling,.....well you can guess the rest.

I'd say that's it, I'm never bothering to watch England again, but in two years time we'll probably qualify and as it will have been a few weeks without football, I'll relapse and subject myself to more calamitous endevour from our prima donners. With Butland hopefully fit in time for Englands first qualifier, I hope that that will be the last we see of Hart in an England shirt (Not that I'll be watching of course! :emoticon-0105-wink:) These players are not this bad in general. Whilst you cannot absolve them of blame, it has to be directed at Coco the Woy. It was like having a five year old manage the team. We need a goal and arn't creating, what should we do? I know put on another striker! I can't believe that we had another manager trying to put square pegs in round holes and giving himself so few options to change games. I think it was Dixon who summed things up. With Germany, Spain and Italy you know how and who they will play. Woy was chopping and changing and experimenting right to the last. Pathetic, small wonder the players then couldn't perform against a well organised but lets face it poor Iceland team.
None of the suggested managers on the list should be considered, Pardew at a push, but who is there out there? I really can't come up with an English man who would make us world beaters, anyone surely can take us forward from this new low. Maybe we have to accept that we just ain't very good, nor will we be, so better to just organise and hoof, Big Sam anyone? I refuse to believe he would have done worse than Woy of the Woeful!

    Bah!

It's small wonder we lost with Mick McCarty and Heskey in the starting line up!
