I think I'd have let him go. It's not like this is a league game, where Ireland could look to hang on in with 10 men, grab a late equaliser, and walk home with a point. All that would achieve here would be ET, meaning another 30 mins with 10 men.

Let him go, and pray that he doesn't score. If he does, you're just as out of it as you are now.

I was thinking let him go as the chance came about, for very the same reasons as you have outlined. Obviously in the heat of the match a footballer will find it difficult to think through the variables, so lunging in tend to be the order of the day.
 
Shame, but it was a tough one for Ireland.

Don't see why the France game will be any worse than it was before (if we get past Iceland)....the French have never liked us. There is a saying that you can be judged by your enemies....we should be proud the French don't like us.
