Absolutely gutted at the result and so sad at how divisive this has turned out for our nation, pitting region against region, generation against generation etc. but many thanks to the contributors on here for making it such an enjoyable debate. Despite being heated at times it covered areas of the debate which the politicians didn't cover and with more mutual respect than they showed.

Do you think the same should have applied during the Scottish Independence referendum and that those from 60 upwards shouldn't have voted? Was it those pesky 60 plus year olds that kept Scotland as part of the UK? Apparently 60 is the new 40.........

I'm getting really wound up at all this vitriol aimed at the older voters.
These old farts are the people who kept this country together during two world wars and fought for your right to have a ****ing vote!
The younger generation will be fine. No one can predict how things will be in 10 or 20 years.

Youngsters today are too precious by half.
They don't know when they're well off.

They would have to be very, very old farts to have kept the country together during 2 World Wars ! My dad fought in the last one and was 96 when he died last year. The problem with the younger old farts (ie 60-70) is that they still remember vestiges of empire and think that we can go back to that.

I am surprised the vote was to leave, I thought it would be similar to the Scottish referendum where there was a lot of bravado before the the vote but when it came to the crunch they bottled it.
I voted to leave for my kids, not in spite of them. Age has nothing to do with it as far as I'm concrete.

Don't be daft mate (quote). There aren't many WW2 veterans left, sadly, and there are certainly no WW1 veterans still around. It would be interesting to know how people who actually lived through WW2 voted - I suspect they would be pro-Remain.

What's the latest thing with youngsters/students? Safe spaces or something? Where no dissenting voice is allowed? Well today is the first day where safe space in a political sense doesn't exist.

My mum is 76 this year, she was born during the war, her father fought in the second world war and her mother built ammunitions. Her grandfather and uncles fought in First World War. My mother is neither senile or stupid and certainly no old fart! She is as entitled to her vote as anyone else! I have no idea how she voted, but she is at least entitled to that vote!!!

Well said Cate, I am getting increasingly irritated by the younger generation suggesting that us older types are no nothing dribbling idiots

Fair point. The older folks in my small circle took the view that 'we didn't win the war to be ruled from Brussels'.
Now if this referendum was being held in the 1950's, I could understand that point of view. It does not wash in 2016.

No disrespect at all, ever, intended towards those whose sacrifice bought us the liberty, freedom of expression and, indeed democracy (even when we don't like the result!) we enjoy today.

With a reported 75% of young people under 25 voting to stay in, there must be a decent chance that in 10 years time, the UK, or whatever is left of it, will be back in the EU, in whatever shape that maybe then.

Gideons Brexit austerity budget was classic project fear, but he did raise the prospect of pensions being fair game when we have to pay for this. Be interesting to see who Johnson's first budget will wallop, don't think he'll hit the older voters that backed him.

I almost get the impression that like Cameron last year, Johnson didn't expect to win and have to deal with this.

Did you see 83 year old Sheila Hancock''s passionate support of Remain, where she recalled the widepread desire of people after WW2 to work far better with/tallk with people of other European countries to help avoid further wars. Not all us old farts have the same nationalistic priorities, and not all of course voted to leave.

My Father was in the RAF during the war. He used to visit Germany. I'm sure would have voted to leave.

The difference is that those over 60 have been exposed to about 30 years of propaganda from the gutter press who always have something stupid to say about the EU. As Bojo said (whilst a journalist), 'never let the facts get in the way of a good story' - and to think that we might end up with this twat as PM ! The youth tend to get their info. more from the internet.

I did see that Oslo, and I think it helps make my point that perhaps those who actually lived through the war might have been more inclined to vote Remain than than the baby-boomer generation that seem to have been instrumental in winning the referendum.
