My weekly punting is going to be based around one form line, so it could be over by 14:05 tomorrow. Epsom 2:00 Cartago 5/1 Epsom 4:30 Ullysses 11/1 Prix Du Jockey Club - Imperial Aviator 15/2. Anyone betting each way in the derby needs to check the terms. Its as bad as the national. Sky bet 1/5 for 5 places, WillHill 1/5 for 3 places.
What's the ground for Epsom tomorrow chaps? I'm keen on Found if it's good ground or better. If it comes up soft i'm less interested.
Really looking forward to seeing Duke Of Firenze once more in the Epsom Dash. We are passing over some of the weather to Epsom tomorrow so it should be a lovely day there and the ground improving from today again. The Duke is raised 1 lb for a comfy success last day out at York to 91 and this has been the target with that York run a nice prep towards it, 13/2 I've taken and it's the minimum wanted here in this type of race. Nothing has inspired me at all for the Derby, I feel it's a very average bunch this year but that's the hand dealt, can't be superstars about every year. I've had a token bet on O'Brien's Port Douglas @ 16/1. I feel he will get the trip well and if he's ridden forward then he may slip the field under a very knowledgeable Colm O'Donoghue ride. 2 weeks ago I followed the boys in blue and had a good return. Last week I followed Johnston who had many fancied runners and I think he had no winners. Over the last couple of days O Meara and Fahey have been banging in the winners too but today I'm going to follow Gosden. The Derby looks a big steaming pile of turd, excuse my francais. Of course we can see a proper one emerge but the fact it's 5/1 the field suggests we're looking at a field of average ones. My original pick was Massaat, as a value play, but he was beaten in one of the worst Guineas we've ever seen and stamina concerns are deepened by the recent heavy rain so I'll look elsewhere. Some hilarious priced horses listed, none more so than Ulysses whose only won a maiden, the form of which went through the gutter in the sand racing the other night. 7/1, unreal. O'Brien throwing half the barn at it implies to me there aren't any superstars amongst them. At least his supposed number one actually won his trial, unlike some of his rivals, and being trained by a genius whose won 6 out of the last 9 Epsom Classics he's clearly worthier of 6/1 quotes than a few others near the top of the market. The French raider is interesting, and it'd be great for the mighty Sea the Stars to have a Derby winner so soon. No bet for me. FOUND was 4/1 with Hills this morning, she looks the bet of the day to me. Postponed beat Eagle Flop over 1m4, Found beat Golden Horn. Incredible market discrepancy to me with the Varian horse Evens, thats far too short. Hopefully the ground dries out towards good ground before the off so we can see this filly show her best.
Good to soft after a dry night. Overcast this morning. Rain is forecast but according to it will arrive in the evening. However, with the 4:30 start you never quite know if it swings by a bit early. Is it soft enough for Harzand? My only concern for him is his size- he is described as a heavy horse by Dermot Weld and he will need to be balanced and to quicken enough to bring his stamina into play. As I said on the Derby thread, I've taken some slices of 40s for ACROSS THE STARS. I really think the Lingfield Derby trial will have brought him forward considerably and made a man of him. The penny seemed to really drop with him in the final furlong, but he was hampered and finished with plenty left in the tank. 1 win from 4 runs is not eye catching but Sir Michael Stoute doesn't rush his horses and they improve so much with racing. Fallon rides today and I hope to see an aggressive, positive ride from him because this one should not stop galloping. I'd probably prefer him to commit for home early from a prominent position than to be held up, so I'm expecting Fallon to hold him up stone dead last I hope he gallops them senseless and uses all the stamina he can, and see if he can hold on. It looks an open Derby and it might take a brave ride to steal this, especially as AOB holds the Aces with the pace angle. Hard to say whether the Ballydoyle team want them to go hard or slow though.
Another big price runner today is SECOND STEP in the Coronation Cup. His form with ground having either the word yielding or soft in it is 211. He sees out 1m 4f very well indeed and he could run a good race at the quoted 25/1 with Bill Hills. I'm a big fan of Found but she has yet to win a race on any ground with the word 'soft' in I believe. I wish I could be absolutely certain of Epsoms going.
Epsom clerk Andrew Cooper says the course has not reached the 'good in places' that he was expecting and that he expects at best the slow side of good. It remains officially Good to Soft.
Lord, the entire Derby family will be turning in their graves. You're right, it's Derby Day and only 11-posts (excluding Attivo's opener) on the DT as at 11:00 BST. So, I'll stick with the supplemented handicapper, for better or worse! Think my Oaks pair are still running!
I rsuppose that most on here are national hunt fans -so a race for unexposed 3 year old is a stab in the dark -means lots to breeders and the money men-doesn't do much for me
Not much of a betting heat maybe, but intriguing nonetheless. Something will need to improve massively to put it's stamp on the day. US Army Ranger and Ulysses look the two most likely to do so, and are both bred in the purple. That's the two I've narrowed it down to anyway. I do fear several though.
Exactly. By five o’clock we may be hailing another potential champion; but as usual there are plenty complaining that it is a poor race before the stalls have even opened. Myself, I am currently looking at the Musselburgh card for a bet where there is proper flat racing ground (Good to Firm). Mark Johnston did me a favour last week and we might both end up on the Edinburgh Gin. Last week’s tip from his yard turns out again after doing my money at Beverley.
Apparantly has his foot in ice, he is sound but obviously they need to make sure for certain that he's A1 before running him.
