Would a team ever consider signing a player who isn't the most talented, but can get any team fired up because he's a mad ****er who's scared of nobody.

Does that happen?
They used to employ an enforcer to play on the 4th line usually not a talented player but good fighter who could deliver big hits. They used to get bonuses according to the number of penalty points they got. I think they have stopped that now though as you cannot really afford passengers nowadays also there is a big drive to get rid of head hits during the game. There have been to many concussions and career ending head shots

I must say. Hockey goalkeepers are the softest bastards I can think of!! How much protection does one person need? Pussy.
Totaly disagree with you there you have to realise that piece of compressed rubber that they are firing at him is frozen before it is brought on the ice. If you ever get to go to a match listen to the bang on the boards when a shot goes wide. You wouldn't catch me anywhere near an ice hockey net - too yellow

I still think they are soft. You could fire bullets at them and they'd probably bounce off.

I've faced a cricket ball coming towards me at 80mph with nothing more than a pair of pads protecting me just above the knee, and a box to protect my cock and balls.

It's an American thing, mate. Look at their 'football' players. Look at how much protection they have, and why!? Rugby players don't have protection.

American soft ****es.

England win a trophy with 2 Sunderland players in the team

Agree with the american football but seriously the NHL have players from around the world (from ice hockey playing nations) and they all wear the protection with good reason. You also have to remember those skates are sharpened and are very dangerous when there is a melle in the blue paint round the keeper. A friend of my family's son lost an eye when a skate went through the bars of his visor and he his not the only one. I have also faced a fast bowler in the seventies btw (he played for a current div 1 county second team) with only a box and pads. Mind my ringpiece is still vibrating now just thinking about it <laugh>

It must happen. Roy Keane wasn't the most talented player, but everyone knew who the gaffer was on the pitch! Him!

Goaltenders in hockey use to wear no masks in the sixties .
Hockey players , run on their skates , to get stitches from trainers in the dressing room and run back as soon as possible as not to miss a shift on the ice .
Contrast that to football when a player roles around the pitch in agony , when in a lot of cases , never got touched .

Got our wish Outlaw <ok> sorry but you are officially classed as an enemy up till June 15th :emoticon-0130-devil <laugh>
Ha, fine with me.
Penguins versus Sharks? We all know the result of that battle! Either way, good luck mate. Sharks never been this far. Very big deal.

Presently in Paris, so missing the first two games:angry::angry:

Na its all to do with circumstances both fighters will get a 5 minute pen for fighting but there may be one who was going to take an initial pen will ussually get an extra 2 mins. Eg. Player 1 slashes player 2 with the stick they then both drop the gloves. Both players get 5 mins but player 1 gets an extra 2 mins for the slash(if the officials saw it of course)
Sometimes players will know they are going to go before the puck is dropped so you see them chatting away waiting for the puck to drop then as soon as that happens they both drop the gloves together - 5 mins each.
No...the result of the fight has nothing to do with how long your penalty is. Someone's who instigates a fight (almost all are mutual), will get an extra 2 minutes.

Hoping for a Shark win in the Stanley Cup Final ..... For Patrick Marleau alone . Great player who has played his entire career with the Sharks . Loyalty is trait long lost in professional sport . Also , being over a 50 year Boston Bruin fan , Sharks captain Joe Thornton was a long serving Boston player before going to the Sharks .

Not true. In the Oldie Times no masks were worn. A goalie who had any sort of length to his career, had his face sown with hundreds of stitches over time and permanently disfured. Toughest bastards ever back in the day. Those pucks are frozen btw, and can be traveling at over 100 mph straight at your face.

We got ourselves an ice hockey thread. Im not complaining like. Aint gotta fucing clue what you are talking about. Much better than the golf and cricket threads though.

Plus i dont mind watching a bit of the psycho sport

I think Plante was the first to wear a mask , not sure , but Gerry Cheevers use to paint stitches on his mask where pucks hit him during his career .... at the end of his career there wasn't much room for painting .

Terry Sawchuck, now there was a Man!!!!

Kinky John...impressed by your knowledge of the game.
Sharks in 6 tho.
Thanks I only started watching ice hockey in the early 90's loved it from the first minute (Durham Wasps). Since John Hall screwed hockey up in the North East I started watching the NHL when I could. We can get it on premiersports tv now (used to be Setanta) but it was better coverage when ESPN had the broadcast rights.
I agree I think the sharks will win they just seem much bigger physically as a team but they may be in bother if they cannot slow our forwards down. Still looking forward to it just hope my recording works tonight - I have been having trouble recording through the night recently. Enjoy Paris btw <ok>
