I understand the pull of big cities and certainly West Ham will offer bigger wages than we do, however I would say that a lot of players want to win things as well as earn a tonne of cash, so I think that really desirability is difficult to gauge.
Said this before but West Ham buy different players then us. They buy players at their peak so most of the time won't out grow the club. We buy players that are young and talented and if they are a success will move on to a bigger club.

Oh dear. I guess this is the point (as per previous summers) where I tootle off.

My prediction, for what it's worth, is that we'll get rid of some players whom we wish to sell, some we'd rather keep if we could and we'll sign some players we want for less money than the fans might expect.

Signing off for now, see you all in August.

I will be here trying to stop people going crazy like every year.

Liverpool is a major city Southampton isn't. If you look at my other post I also said paying higher wages was a factor. That and both West Ham and Everton are bigger clubs.

If anything Southampton is where old retired players come to live.

Liverpool is a bigger city yes, and both are important ports. Southampton is a major city regionally. Can't dispute wages, but I don't think it is always that simple a choice for every player, and I'm a reasonably objective fan, once the season is over!

It isn't always good to keep your payers. West Ham is doing better now, but it wasn't too long ago they were in serious financial trouble. They were able to keep their players because no one else wanted to take on those exorbitant salaries.

That is the risk/reward. If you pay more, you will be better able to keep your players if they do well, but you are more likely to be stuck with them if they do poorly.

The reason Mane wants to leave is that he wouldn't have to find change to go over the toll bridge after the game if he was at another PL club, I reckon. :emoticon-0105-wink:

when Mane joined it was voiced by his manager that we were very much a stepping stone to a big club. Its no secret Man U have been sniffing around, and why not, on his day he is probably the most destructive player in the premiership as there is no way defenders can deal with him if he gets the correct service. Its the club policy of picking up unknown hungry players and bring them in, and us use as a stepping stone. We get 2 or 3 years good service and double or triple the initial outlay- perfect. If ron sees the club do everything in their power to keep players, then he should understand that players want to move and the club can do nothing about it but get as much money as they can and back him 100% with transfers

Indeed, Peter Osgood is a famous example of a player that stayed in the area after playing here in the twilight of his career and he was certainly someone who enjoyed the trappings of the London lifestyle in his younger days.

We have little or no option to sell to the bigger wage paying clubs due to player power however we must continue to rinse these clubs for massive fees.
Reports that Arsenal want Mane for £17m is ridiculous, include The Ox and £17m then I would consider this a deal worth considering. Manure want him for £25m according to other papers, include Snidders and that's a deal!

17mill plus Chamberlain = **** off Arsenal.

17m is a joke. Doubt we will get 40m though. Hopefully we can hold out for 30m if a team gets serious. Maybe a bit more if there are multiple teams.

Wouldn't be too confident. He has two years left on his contract. I'd hold out for ridiculous, silly money for that. I think Koeman said during January that Mane would not leave even if some stupid club waved £100M. I doubt if that view of his his has changed markedly. The remark wasn't about not letting him go at the time. It was about not letting him go until we are good and ready. That's not until the end of next season.

Arsenal are signing Xhaka for £30m.

That's without the premier league and attaching player premium.
Don't think £40m for mane is unrealistic

Plus attacking players will always have a Premium, especially ones that have scored more than 10 PL goals in each of the last two seasons. Mane doesn't even play as a ST and gets more goals then most of them. £35 million+ please.

Why shouldn't you think this close season won't be different.? This is all made up stuff. They call it rumour.
Well I wouldn't say it was made up stuff because the people saying it seem to be more reliable than most but I was referring to the fan reactions more than the actual rumour/comments/speculation. As I said in an earlier post, 2 of those players leaving wouldn't really bother me and 2 are players we've strongly suspected would be leaving this summer anyway. I'd prefer those 4 to be all that left but I won't get too bothered at this point - so far nobody's been sold.

I know Long is underrated by many people but... £25m for an almost 30-year-old striker who has only once scored 10 goals in the Premier League? o_O
