3.15 YORK- TWILIGHT SON- 4/1

How he isn't favourite tomorrow is beyond me and is great value! Only beaten the once by Muhaarar last year and in the process beating quite a few of this field including the favourite Magical Memoryand altho he is giving 5lb to the field he still has room for improvement from last year. If he is any aspirations for being a consistent group 1 sprinter he will need to take this in the bag

On Tuesday I got a text from a friend with two tips for Beverley races. Shame it was 1:45 and I was in the office as they both won at 7/4 and 11/8.

I can see that York is going to be difficult to find a bet: massive fields in the handicaps with hardly any form to go on and total guesswork how the races will be run; whilst the big races attract small fields at short prices.

I have no doubt that Timeless Son is the best sprinter in the Duke Of York Stakes on form; however, he has to carry a five pound penalty and I think that race fit Magical Memory will master him on this occasion. The trouble is that the bookies think the same so he does not look a betting proposition when he has so little in hand over several of his other rivals – like Tupi and Mattmu, second and third at Newmarket. If there is going to be an upset, it could be Eastern Impact at a big price.

The Gosden/Dettori combination won last year’s Musidora and they look to have another prime candidate in the unbeaten So Mi Dar. It is difficult to gauge whether the opposition are of much merit but if the favourite is going to Epsom she needs to win well here. Interesting that Fireglow turns out quickly after her surprise fourth in the Guineas and Best In The World may have a great pedigree but needs to be a lot better than her form if she is not just here as a Ballydoyle form measure.

I would like Pacify in the opener but not at this track when they might come up the stands side, down the centre or stay on the far side.
 
I must agree Wooly, surely Twilight Son should be favourite. Everything about the price makes you want to steam in and everything about the race makes you want to stay well out.

So Mi Dar looks unbeatable and even value at 5-6

Bogart always goes well at this track so worth an interest and Pacify does look good, but again a difficult race.

Kevin Ryan was very bullish about Bogart in a recent stable tour! Seems to do well round York and is on a very interesting mark! I backed him a couple of times last year and he blew out so I'm sticking with him again!
 
Off to York tomorrow so please mark my card.

I fancy taking on Gosden's So Mi Dar (who looks plenty short enough) in the Musidora. Fireglow appears to have done little wrong and her 4th in the 1000G is the best form in the race. For breeding enthusiasts she comes from a now defunct Cliveden line. Her 4th dam was the admirable Seventh Bride who later produced the Oaks winner Polygamy. This filly's great granddam was a full sister to Polygamy called One Over Parr. This is the distaff line of Camelot. I'm sure Fireglow will be suited by today's distance.

I was looking forward to seeing Buanarotti (25/1) reappear after he finished last season with a cracking second behind Chelsea's forum star Litigant. I believe connections think the latter has Group 1 potential at 14-16f so Buonarottis run reads well.

He's 5 now, isn't overly raced, and has been campaigned largely at 12f. However he doesn't seem to be flying late over 12f but most certainly was flying when a never nearer 4th over the 10f at Doncaster last August. I wonder if the assertion that today's trip is too short might be a bit wide of the mark.

His Rating is down to 87 now having been over 100 as a result of being from the Ballydoyle team and his reappearance last month was full of promise (never nearer). York is a nice open galloping track and with race fitness now assured, I fancy him to go close to striking for the Declan Carroll team, despite the potential of the Newmarket raiders.

The touch of rain this morning will hold no fears for him.

John Gosden watching So Mi Dar going down to post, his latest classic hope - And then the David Elsworth Australian Queen walks past in those Purple silks worn by Arabian Queen - he must think not again please!
 
What a race that will be if Minding and So Mi Dar line up in the oaks. So Mi Dar looked as though she will improve over 12f as she was only doing her best work at the end. Minding will have her for speed over 8f and possibly 10f but will Minding have speed left over 12f - can't wait to find out.

Next at York is very interesting from a punting point of view as there is clearly a bias to the far side. Due to this two short priced horses Albernathy and Chief whip will have it all to do coming across fro out wide and racing on the worst ground once doing so. I would see this as an opportunity to reduce the betting propositions to two horses in Abe Lincoln and Castle Harbour. I have gone for Abe Lincoln as he was backed into warm favourite for a listed all weather race which you would imagine suggests they eventually see him as more than a handicapper, the horse (as many) is completely unexposed and I hope can take this.
 
Barneys comments about old boy Humphrey Bogart in the Derby suddenly look a touch more within reach- he stays, acts at Epsom and Lingfield, and has close form with So Mi Dar.

No doubt the Dante will add more clues to cling onto tomorrow with Midterm.
