Living in Bristol I have heard a few things about Nicky Maynard this summer mainly involving Leicester. I have many Bristol City supporting mates and one mate in particular who seems to know his stuff regarding City. He has told me today that apparently (and I stress apparently ) we have made another bid/enquiry about Maynard in the last couple of days. Make of this what you will, just passing on a rumour that I've heard
If you believe the rumours, we've made a bid everyday for the last three weeks, he's had 6 medicals and signed for various different fees... ranging from £2m + Puncheon up to £6m - all in all it's just nonsense really!
Tbh I haven't seen us linked with him for what seems like an eternity, in actual fact its only been probably 5 or so weeks I just thought I'd let you guys know what I've heard, and its from a source that I find more credible than some of the newspapers reporting rumours as, like I said, this friend has been right on quite a few other City matters before. He has, however also been wrong a few times aswell Hopefully this is one of the ones he gets right
Thats only from the football rumour site thought, so doesn't really count as a rumour as people just write stuff becuase they are bored...
Looks like he is going to Leicester. They'd better hope they sell him because he'll be worth £500k in January.
I don't really understand the whole "Oh he costs 5mil, well lets not get him then" arguement at all. Surely if the money is available to NA and he sees Maynard as the ideal signing then why not spend it? Maynard, when fit, is one of if not the best striker outside the Premier League imo. So if the opportunity arises to sign him for 5/6 mil and we have the funds then why not go for it? If he turns into a class player for us over the next couple of years and we get promoted then 5/6 mil will look like peanuts in comparison to the extra revenue we would get from a return to the PL
I doubt he will go anywhere. He will probably stall contract talks and stay at Bristol City this season. He will probably see how Bristol City do this season and maybe leave on a free next season like Jay Bothroyd.
wouldn't want him for anything more than £1.5m - he isnt worth it by a long long way. Stick him and barny in the same team and I bet Barny would outscore him.
It's usually common for teams who have a wantaway player with a year on his contract to hold out for the best deal and that will come toward the end of the window. City will know if they have any chance of getting him to sign an extention, if not i'm sure they're on the hunt for a replacement and will prob play teams off against each other around mid to late august. If we're in the hunt for him fair play, but judging by our two signings so far NA & NC like a bargain.
I think more accurately Saintly they won't pay more than what they think a player is worth. The fee for De Ridder has been described as substantial, it may prove to be a bargain in the long term though.
I appreciate this, but, as NC has said numerous times the budget for each year of the five year plan was set out from the very start when the Liebherrs bought the culb. I'm assuming that they forecasted the turnover of the club and profit/loss that the clubs makes and within the budgets set out they have included some of their own personal fortune. I may be completely wrong and they may just be reinvesting what the club generates itself and not using any of their own money. All i'm saying is if the money is available to NA then I think Maynard would be a brilliant signing and if we can get him now then we should, as I don't think we will be able to get him next year unless we get promoted.
Magic, with a multi-million pound signing also comes a big wage, they run hand in hand whoever the player may be. We are paying good wages to our star players, but not ridiculous wages. Would you want a sudden signing coming in and being paid twice as much as Lallana, Fonte & Lambert? I most certainly wouldn't. I want our players rewarded with the success they bring, but I don't want the club to chuck money at targets like Leicester are doing, its a very short term plan, as I believe we will see as the season progresses. We've got great continuity in the squad, that is worth more than the signing of a one big player.
Yes Maynard would be a multi million pound signing in that you are correct. At the moment Maynard is reportedly on about 8k a week at City. I obviously have no idea how much he is asking for in his new deal, or if that is the reason he isn't signing a deal or whether he just wants a move to a "bigger" club. Lets assume we do bid for him and its accepted, and he asks for double his current wage, that is 16k a week. I'm not sure how much Lallana, Fonte and Lambert (and possibly Cork aswell) are on but it wouln't surprise me if it is around the same figure. As for bringing in a "star" player could disrupt squad morale, surely signing any player could be disruptive? As at the end of the day whenever you sign a player it is to fill a hole in the squad which the players may feel doesn't need to be filled. Or the player just doesn't fit in with the general personality of the squad. That is where the manager has to judge the character of the player to see if he thinks he will fit in well with the rest of the players
Magic, your figures don't add up I'm afraid. I too feel we are the bigger club, but Bristol City have been plying their trade at a higher level than us for the last couple of years. In that time they have signed ex England Keeper David James from a club not to far from here, & apparently what they are paying him was not to dissimilar to what PFC were after relegation. Maynard is on more than £8K a week, & Lallana is not on £16k. I appreciate fans want us to do well, but at what cost?
I'm just repeating what I have been told by friends who know more about the club than I about wages etc. James is apparently on about 20k a week and when signed was by far their highest earner. Maynard has not signed a new deal since James has been signed so we can safely say imo that he is on less than 20k a week. If he is stalling over a contract with City because of the wages then yes, he may want too much for us to affordably sign him. I have said all along that I think he would be a very good signing as imo he is better than our current strikers, but only sign him if the money is available within the budgets already outlined to NA, I'm not saying we should break the bank to get him
Fair play. If anything, I'm probably more nervous about over playing players than losing them to the top four. Our last outing in the Championship saw us paying players who did very little, a lot of money. I'm liking the harmony at present, these guys want to be here, they want to progress, & we are a great club for that to happan at. If Leicester are sniffing around, he'll know he can get more money there anyway. Lets see what happans.
