Reports today are that Mata's representatives are in London to broker a deal with Arsenal for Juan Mata. Along with the necessary pinch of salt that comes with any tabloid story, the Mirror are really pushing this one, so there could be something to it.

Also it was mooted a few days ago that if Barca can't meet our £40m value of Cesc, then a cash plus player deal could be on the cards, with Thiago Alcântara mentioned. He scored a brilliant curling goal for Barca last night and looks as though he could fit right in at Arsenal.

Would you be happy if these events materialised ?

John Cross the Mirror journalist is an Arsenal fan and apparently he is meant to be close to people at the club.If so there could be truth in this story <ok>

Would prefer to sign Mata as a replacement for Nasri and keep Cesc..................However that is unlikely.

If these two deals come off as above, plus samba or similar then I would be a fairly happy gooner. Nasri Out for hazard (as Nasri has really annoyed me this year) and I would consider that to be an excellent transfer window. Cherry on the top would be bendtner leaving to be replaced by benzema but we cant have everything...

John Cross knows absolutely sod all about Arsenal. If we sign Mata in the next 2-3 days I would be very surprised. Also IF representatives were in London to do a deal, more people would know about it. This is just a scum journalist hack pretending he is 'in the know'. And yes I know he's 'apparently' and Arsenal fan and appears on ATV, but given his articles, its clear he's none too bright, and certainly not in any way 'inside' the club.
I take it you're not impressed with John Cross then ?

didn't thiago recently sign a new contract with a £90m buy-out clause, so i doubt that will work

We need to play hardball with Barca. If they want Cesc they need to PAY UP.

He's our team Captain still only 24 and in the current market is worth at least £40 Million.

If Barca are willing to pay £37 Million plus Eto'o for Ibrahimovic or £35 Million for Sanchez they can get another loan out for Mr Fabregas.

I still hope we keep him but I'll be really pissed off if we let another key player go on the cheap.

Is Thiago actually Spanish?

Plus, you need to upgrade your team, get some more experience and depth... Mata is tres bien

Thiago's was actually born in Italy but has played for all of Spain's youth teams so he may as well be Spanish. Though I'm sure they'd all say he's got barca DNA if they ever wanted him back.

He is got Brazilian ancestors, too. Marzinho, part of the 1994 World Cup winning Brazilian team, is his father.

But I agree with the second part. They would want him back one day anyway. But I don't know how Cesc would fit into their team at this moment.

And the way they dealt with Roma regarding Bojan, I would never agree to that:

They sold him for 12 Million Euros to Roma and have a buy-back clause for 2013 for 13 Million Euros.
But if Roma refuse to let him go back for 13 Million Euros, the Italians have to cough up an additional 28(!) Million Euros and only then they can have Bojan permanently.

And they really expect to get away with ~£30m offer for someone like Fabregas...

Juan Mata on the other hand, could be realistic and help us straightaway.

The rumours about Mata seem to be gathering pace <ok>

Here is John Cross' Mirror article - with translation:

Arsenal were last night closing in on a £15million deal for Juan Mata – paving the way for Cesc Fabregas to go to Barcelona. I dont know anything about a fee or amount for Matabut its time I carried on with my 'revelation' from last month about Mata. I am not in any way privvy to a link between Mata and Fabregas, but its sounds good if I say it and it might happen, making me look like I am an insider.

Fabregas will not be involved in this weekend’s Emirates Cup, a clear sign that the Gunners are becoming resigned to losing him. I am making an assumption that ***regas is not injured because it supports my sensational claim.

But that blow is likely to be softened by the signing of Valencia’s exciting winger Mata – as predicted by the Mirror last month . I have no idea whether this is likely or not. Sorry i just couldnt resist saying how great I am by telling you I predicted this last month. Yes - I know what I predicted last month still isn't true, but I need to make something up to get paid.

The Spanish star’s family and representatives flew into London yesterday for talks.
Well, I've just made this up, but it adds weight to my made up article.

Versatile Mata, 23, can play wide or as an attacking midfielder and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes the deal will be a major boost for his squad. I dont know what Arsene thinks, because I am the last person he would talk to - but I need to look smart

He is still hoping French midfielder Samir Nasri – a target for Manchester United and Manchester City, with just one year left on his current contract – will sign a new five-year deal. I have no idea about the Nasri contract negotiations, but I may as well say 5 years because it makes me sound in the know

Fabregas has made it clear that he wants to join Barca, although the European champions have yet to meet Arsenal’s £40m asking price. Yes, I know he has only ever said he wants to play for Barca one day, but if I am going to keep the pretence of knowing something about what goes on at the club, I need to say it with certainty

That has left the Gunners’ skipper, who has missed all of Arsenal’s pre-season games with a hamstring injury, working on his own at the training ground. Ok, this is not true at all. I just made it up because he didnt go to Germany. I have assumed he's all alone and I wanted to try and paint a picture of an outcast

Barcelona made an initial bid of £27m and followed that up with two more conversations. I am not sure of any conversations that have taken place because no one at the club would ever tell me, but if I say two, then it makes me appear to be very knowledgeable.

But, despite promising a deal will be done by this weekend, they still haven’t come back with an increased offer. Ok, i have totally made this one up - no one has ever mentioned anything about a deal being doen this weekend, but again, I have to appear in the know, otherwise i'd have to face the reality that no one tells me anything and I am an outcast when it comes to Arsenal

Best post i've seen on here for a while. Go on son, have some rep.

12.53: Gooners’ excitement of yesterday’s claims that Arsenal are on the verge of signing Juan Mata is now little but a faded memory. @GuillemBalague tweets: “It is false that the family of Juan Mata (his dad is agent) has travelled to London to talk to English clubs”

As I said - John Cross is an utter cretin - with no insight into Arsenal football club. Of course Balague also hates Arsenal, and his annual Cesc has signed for Barcelona 'comfirmations' have made him look like a twat on many occassions.
Guillem Balague now seems to think Arsenal will make a bid
