But someone was telling me that Fratton Park was very atmospheric with its noisy fans!!! Uum? And the Dell was good when it was hosing down? I enjoyed the Dell days when we were entertained by a marching band on a blazing sunny day, and during the match when Ron Davies would head in a Paine cross on numerous occasions.
Yep. And listening to the DJ playing the same old records on the Tannoy. I think I grew a big soft spot for Tamla Motown Records simply because they were played so often at The Dell. To this day, if I hear the opening bars to Tears of a Clown, by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, I can vividly picture the East Stand with the Sun shining into it, and the big Watneys sign on the advertising board. I'd either be behind the goal or near the player's entrance at the Milton Road end [chocolate box era] although my first season was in the Archers end, as I was too scared of the Milton Mob's reputation. Funny that the Milton ended up as the 'Family' end.
