As it happened, we crushed United and scored 3 goals. We should have had far more. They, in contrast, has no shots on target. I think that he played about 4 players in their best position today and one of them was De Gea. Martial? Striker playing as a winger. Young? Winger playing as a striker. Lingard? Winger playing as an attacking midfielder. Mata? Attacking midfielder playing as a winger. Rojo and the excellent Fosu-Mensah? Centre-backs playing as fullbacks. No creativity at all and I think that it's easy to see why.
What the hell was that all about ? The blindingly obvious one was Martial on the wing and Young in the middle. But as you say, right through the whole team he had players out of position. I really can't fathom LVG and it's no wonder his players look like they don't know what they are doing. That dressing room must be a really tough place to be at the moment, because they have talented players who must feel like they are being stifled in LVG's team.
The starting defence and the two deeper midfielders were pretty effective, to be fair to him. Did a lot of good closing down, worked hard, tackled aggressively and stifled our game, til Fosu-Mensah had to go off. Then Darmian came on and they spectacularly collapsed in about 8 minutes! The whole attack made no sense at all, though. Lots of players that weren't just out of position, but were all playing in each other's positions. You could've made them far more comfortable and effective just by switching them all around. Weird.
That's the issue ! It wasn't like he had loads of injuries and was forced to bring players in who weren't in their natural positions. It was the fact that he had the players on the pitch, but elected to play them in each other's positions. Crazy, and it makes me wonder if he does actually have a smoke before a game
