I know it's been covered before, but the inconsistency in the decision made by referees is getting worse I feel and the sooner we get a TMO the better.
In our game, we had a legitimate claim for a penalty instantly turned down, yet Newcastle get one.
Cheikhou Kouyate was sent off by Clattenburg for what the seemed a fairly innocuous challenge according to Garth and Dion on 'Final Score'.
How on earth did Saints not get a penalty yesterday????
I'm sure we'll still be questioning decisions when we do have a TMO next season!!!!

The refereeing this season has been the worst I can recall. And not just for us - there have been dreadful decisions in our favour too.

The problem is that the balance of the dreadful decisions always seems to impact the supposedly "smaller" teams more. Costing us many more points than we've gained

I'd definitely agree with that comment Rob and I wonder what conclusion yesterday's referee would have made had it been at the other end of the pitch!!!!!
 
The fact that refs are now so called professionals has made no positive difference at all and I agree with all of the comments above. It is a tough job no doubt, but the overall level of decision making at crucial times is poor and is unlikely to improve, particularly as one or two seem to embrace the celebrity status - which is ridiculous of course.
Q - have we had a penalty this year?

WOW - how true that is!!!!!

One against Liverpool which Hoolahan almost had saved!!!!
 
Have to say that they don´t all go against us though, 8 or 9 out of 10 refs would have given handball against Howson in the build up, to what might be the most important goal Olsson will ever score. There was certainly as much handball on that as there was on Newcastle´s penalty decision. So no complaints here about the occasional slip from the men in black/blue/yellow. ;)

All very true RBF, but your points just confirm the original post. "INCONSISTANCY". My brother in law who I sit with is obsessed by it and spends the whole game shouting and screaming at the officials. He might watch the game one day!! Lol

My biggest problem with officials is actually their consistency. They alway seem to favour the bigger fish. A well managed introduction of technology can not come soon enough. That said, we could sort a lot out with retrospective punishments. If diving were punished every game on review and bans and significant fines handed out of significant severity, then maybe we could make the officials job a bit easier during the 90.

I've been keeping an eye on this throughout the season:

Basically, they have a 'panel' who analyse all the 'major refereeing decisions' each week. Then they put that analysis into a table to show which teams have most/least benefited from poor decisions throughout the season.

As you can see, West Ham have been very hard done by according to this, whilst Man Utd and Leicester have been given an advantage through refereeing decisions (we're almost breaking even):

I'm finding it a little hard to believe we have only had 9 contentious decisions for or against us all season! You could argue there were 3 just on Saturday!

It's not really 'total' contentious decisions. Only ones they consider 'big' decisions (e.g. sending offs, decisions leading to goals etc etc).

They do give explanations for their reasoning which is sort of good.

So decisions that prevent goals from being scored are not included?

I'm struggling to find a link to the 'Week 1' version, but they definitely analyse 'disallowed goals' of various types. Therefore, I'm going to say yes.
 
Then I will come full circle and say "really only 9! for all the games so far when you could argue there were 3 in the last game alone! I don't believe it! It feels like we get stiffed or an odd bit of luck more often than every 3rd game! Unfortunitely more of the former not the later!

Then I suggest you re-watch all of our games and make your own tally and analysis, Herr General!
 
My scientific analysis I carried out myself shows that we have been hard done by 98 times so far this season, and benefited 11 times.


But seriously, you're right JK that while their analysis is a long long way from perfect it at least is better than nothing and shows the impact these decisions have had.

Sounds like a touch of yellow and green specs there, Rob :) - hard done by, on average, at least three times in every game so far, this season? - Mmmmmmmm !
