Large payoff and a confidentiality agreement was probably included in this.

I reckon she's took the fall for a ****e situation so that everyone else's hands are 'clean'.

Even so, who the **** employs a ****ing lawyer to run a football club. What a shambles.

So as I understand it AJ told her that he had been grooming and kissing an under age girl, but also told her he was going to plead innocent.

Then she allows him to continue to represent the football club

Not too sure what there is to be appalled about

I am appalled because he was innocent until there was evidence of guilt

Club Statement

Club statement from Sunderland AFC.

The Board of Sunderland AFC has today accepted the resignation of Margaret Byrne.

Margaret, in her role as CEO, was responsible for the running of the club. She was also accountable for the actions taken by the club in relation to Mr. Johnson. Sunderland AFC acknowledges that Margaret's intentions have always been to act in the best interests of the club, however it has become clear through our own internal investigations that in this instance decisions have been taken by Margaret in error.

Whilst swift and decisive action was taken to terminate Mr. Johnson’s employment upon his guilty plea, decisions taken prior to this, including the decision not to suspend him for a second time pending the outcome of the trial, were wrong. In light of what has been acknowledged by Margaret as a serious error of judgment on her part, we have undertaken a full review of the club’s decision-making processes to ensure that there can be no such mistakes in the future.

Throughout this deeply regretful situation, we recognise that one devoted young fan and her family have been very badly let down, first and foremost by Mr. Johnson and his despicable actions, but also by the club they support. We are so very sorry for this.

Mr. Johnson lied to the club; he also lied to our fans and they have every right to feel aggrieved by this. Lessons have been learned and we hope that the club and its fans can move forward from this together.
At last a right call from the club in this sad but terrible saga - hope that absolves the club of much abuse ( idiots will still pick up on it of course<doh> ) and lets move on and look forward to next season in the Premiership rolling in TV money with BSA & his football knowledge at the helm. <cheers>

Yet you must be astounded, as a Newcastle fan, that even with all of this ****storm that has tipped up in Sunderland these past few weeks, your club still appear to be the bigger joke. WTF is going on? Absolutely battered by Bournemouth at home and the lads get Monday off and McClaren is still employed!

I know LVG hasn't exactly covered my club in glory and we're a bit of a ****up ourselves this season but you always seem to manage to beat everybody else to the top prize <laugh>

The sad thing is that I am not the least bit surprised :(

True but the club has a duty of care to its employees and wider community - the abuse he received was terrible and the victim and her family were equally abused while they were also innocent at the time but R it's a sad shocking saga which has been resolved - imo no disputes needed - we should all move on

so she had information regarding him kissing her and the texts but didn't tell anybody else on the board ?and nobody else asked her what information she had regarding his arrest.I take it she is dead as the sword she has fell on must be huuuuge

What she was told counts as hearsay, not evidence.

Was this information used in court? Yes, therefore it's evidence regardless of how true it is.

You can blindly defend the club in all of this if you want but you'll be in the minority IMO.

She sacked him once it was mentioned in court. So what's your problem?
