How can anyone claim the match against Bournemouth is a local derby. We don't even have an insultingly rude name for them. (Yet)

Of course it is a derby. They are a few miles down the coast they are in the same division. Whether you want to call it a derby is another matter. When saints started to challenge Pompey properly they would not acknowledge it as a derby. In reality of course it was and eventually it was excepted. No difference for most with the cherries and soon enough will be insulting each other.

Not a derby, but I do regard them as a junior side....so will be annoyed if they win. However, can tolerate losing to them far more than I can tolerate losing to Liverpool or Spurs (that makes me spit feathers....got enough for a pillow already). I also bear them very little ill will...in fact, no ill will....so they fail the derby test.

It's a derby in sense of location, but not really a rivalry... AT THE MOMENT. That could change if they stop up for a few seasons, sometimes it's just a one 90 minute match where rivalries are born...

By the way, I would just like to point out that this thread in no way, shape, form, substance, or concept constitutes a match thread.

    Thank you, that is all.

It's 30 miles stadium to stadium so I would consider that local. And yes I would call it a derby.
"Games between two rivals of close geographical proximity are usually called a local derby" (Wiki)

You don't have to hate another team for it to be a derby.

I care more about beating Bournemouth than about Stoke or WBA, for example, but the difference is so marginal that I refuse to call it a derby in the sense of rivalry. I suppose the reason I care more is because of proximity, so I suppose it is a derby in that sense. Do I want to grind them in the dust, see them go bankrupt and endure endless relegations....no.

Bournemouth are like a little brother, who you want to see grow big and strong and do well.

But not ever be better than you are yourself.

I was born in Shirly, but at 4 years old moved to Broadstone near Wimborne. I have always follow the ups and downs of Bornemouth, and always hope they do well except when they play us. I have been looking forward to this match, so why can't it be refered to as 'friendly local darby' no need for name calling.

It is a local derby, this is a fact, it is not a matter of opinion.

There is no need for hatred, rivalry can be friendly. I have never gone in for hating other football teams (although Spurs and Liverpool do test this resolve sometimes) and I cringe whenever we sing those crap songs about Pompey. You do not need to be pathetic about another football team for a match against them to be a derby.

The only possible thing that you could argue that this isn't a derby is that Bournemouth are in a different county to us. But I don't buy that - it's a derby but it's certainly not a rivalry. Subtle difference.
