I would say our midfield is "average" in all aspects as it shows. they are not the most physical, most quick, most tehcnical... they are all dullard.s

I agree. Henderson, Milner, Can and even Lallana are all just far too similar. I am hoping Grujic maybe offers something different, but I would love if we could get a Gundogan or Veratti type (obviously a more sensible target).

Allen and Lucas are the same again, but they are just squad players really

Grujic will be a squad option - wouldn't bank on him starting many games.

If we bring in Havard Nordtveit on a free, then I expect us to go big on another CM - someone like Xhaka. Gundogan could be relatively cheap considering he'll have one year left on his contract come summer time.

he had his place but he usually just got sent off.

That was PROBABLY why he was not picked by west ham really...

You need one guy in there tall enough to compete in the air.

He got three red cards in three and a half years. For an aggressive determine DM, that's not that bad! I'd love more players like him and Suarez in the team, players that give a **** even if we're 5-0 down!

Yes that is true.

Yeah I give a crap players are great buy getting rarer and rarer.

My ideal without the ball is a fast press to recover then a layered defense... with guys who realise high and long are the mantra of clearing danger. If you take it down and dribble in your own box or barely clear your lines or let it bounce or dealy clearing you are asking fro trouble.

IF we have the height to dominate other sides then is matip can't pass more than 10 yards but can clear his lines i'm happy.

Look at lovern under rodgers.. floundering trying to keep ball alive, beat men, play it 40 yards.... just do what you are good at is not a bad mantra to have.
To be fair to the players, I'm pretty sure it's expected of them these days to try and play their way out of trouble- it isn't just them deciding it for themselves.
In reality though, you have to have the players capable of doing this, and this is where we've suffered recently. There's nothing wrong with knowing when to get rid, and the idea that it always comes back to you is exaggerated. If your strikers put pressure on the receiving defender you've a good chance of picking up a loose clearance. And even if it does come back, you've had time to regroup. Getting caught in possession in your own box is just madness.

It was under rodgers saint.

I'm not so sure that in certain spots and scenairos klopp wants anything but smash it.

Lets look at lovern's total gaff under rodgers.

what is there to gain with one person closing a player down and you manage to beat him... at best you get to pass it to keeper or HOOOOF it down the line.

instead you totally mess up and lose it and let i na goal.

IMO the first and most vital job is clear the ball. Anything crossed should be high and long clearance... why? simply put every one should be looking at you to do that and be getting out to make a line for offside or to break to chase the clearance... if you muck about your defense is out of place and worse if its in your pen area it only needs fall to an opponent for a shot.

You can play it about and pass it when theres support to do so... not when the team is in transition from deep defense to getting up the pitch... I say out it in the stand as a defender every time. Put it high and wide... I hate how even when we try this we fail a lot of the time to either get it out of the pen area (taking 2 and 3 attempts at hacking it clear) or we head it down right to where opponents position guys to run in and shoot from deep.

When we play a small guy up top usually it will come right back at us... when we do clear it.

What I am talking about is not mingolet tossing it to lovern who hoofs it 60 yards at benteke... no i am talking a cross comes in and toure heads it straight up in the air or worse miscues it totally or where guys like coutinho get caught out trying to be clever chipping it over a guys head trying to beat them and start a run from their own area then lose it and its a clear chance.

Just clear your lines.

this one shot one goal stat that mingolet was bashed with ... some of it is down to mingolet but theres a good bit down to rank defending that we go for a while then just cough up a totally clear cut chance that should be scored.

Because just clearing your lines means that you end up giving possession back to the opposition and then being under attack again.

Nothing wrong with playing the ball out of trouble. The problem is with the players executing it.

Correct there isn't. But then, that's not against what I said either. I said in certain circumstances its better to clear your lines. For example, in your own six yard box when under pressure!

not if the choice is a **** header to give them a direct chance.

Put it in the stand and reset your lines is the basic tenant of solid defending.

Pass it fast and accurate when its there.

look back in time guys... look at the shocking goals we've conceded off set piece where we do very poorly off the second ball or see guys enter the box from covering spots not trusting the defenders in there and leaving guys open to have free shots...

same for coutinho there is a goal in my memory where he tried to chip it over a guy when it came to him at the far post and he lost it and they scored.

when your team mates are assuming you'll clear it and are getting out to play guys offside and you cough it up you virtually give a goal away.

...........

in case anyone's missed this Stones at everton has been doing this ridiculous stuff lately and everton have been hurt as a result. He can play out but playing out in bad areas coughs up goals but RARELY results in anything more than basic possession.

If you can explain how playing the ball in your six yard box when you are stones can make a goal scoring chance great BTW.... really simple.

same as goals from breaking out from corners. Its VERY rare to actually score off one. Its better to have 11 back with your fast technical players on the edge of box to break from there than a forward standing in centre circle.

Most of the time sides focus on clearing it and teams then rather than lump it forward and get caught offside pass it back or square while team shape is regained.

IF LFC focused on merely the basics... , hold a good line, block crosses, make positive strong clearances, high and wide on headers, wide on kicking ball away... put ball out for a throw if you have anyone closing in... never let it bounce.. never turn your back on play etc etc... well we'd concede far less.

Its actual rare we see a total free header goal off a set piece really. there are exceptions like west brom or fa cup game but we see a huge amount off really sloppy clearances or players doing crazy stuff.

Look at goals we've let in lately, sahko running up pitch chasing, lovern letting it bounce v leicester...... theres an awful lot to be said for getting the basics right first.

3 things i'll stand over.

1. flanagan knows when to LOSE IT!

2. he will keep a line and actually actively help organise it.

3. he won't be caught dribbling in his pen area.

Clyne point 3 same but... the toehr 2? point 1 maybe.

Sahko... thinks he is way better than he is

Lovern... tries too hard.

Moreno.. brainless

Toure.. weak clearances, not actually tall enough

Flanno is your best defender.

Sahko is basically a black david luiz, playstation player.

I totally agree. exacly the same sort of stuff. when LFC are chasing a game he will be creeping further and further the whole time.

If he stuck to holding the line and the passing he can do and not taking it down on the chest irrespective of how close an opponent is etc. He makes very good straight passes forward that really can help us stat an attack rather than just be a square ball merchant like skertl.... well he'd be a better player.

I just think he fancies himself a lot.

I think he puts everything in to it like agger, people appreciate that. people appreciate his passing positivism but he's got to do the bloody basics.

I honestly think Rodgers dropped the guy cos he would not stay in line and i think 343 suited the guy co he could run off as he please with cover behind. Twice rogers dropped him. Klopp has brought him in and after injury brought him back in but i have to wonder on some level if all CBS were fit whats going to happen.

Matip is another lcb....

Moreno playing left forward when the back line has it doesn't help either. He's far to far up the park. his starting position is half way inside opponents half when he feels like it.

If he'd start on the half way line sahko would have an out ball for his passing. look next game... look tonight. often sahko can't pass wide left as moreno is cut off due to being so far up

Lol 100% agree with this. Moreno another terrible defender. Has all the right attributes but none of brain, that includes on when to tackle or when to shepherd his man.

Sahko could actually be a rock. Has a good pass and can run with it. Hes actually a brilliant 1 on 1 defender i think but hes like luiz, too fancy.

Stick with flanno
