Since the charges, two things have surprised me

    1) He had played for Sunderland in the intervening period
    2) His girlfriend has been by his side(especially today, after pleading guilty)

I can only come to the conclusion that he has been spinning both the club and his girlfriend along. I hope that the revelations from today will finally open her eyes to the type of man* he is

    * a very selfish and irresponsible one

On point 1, if you visit the Sunderland board, they are incensed most of all that he apparently denied everything to the club, so they kept faith with him, and carried on paying his massive salary.

    Agree totally on point 2.

It is pretty obvious that Johnson enjoys manipulating people and could do so easily due to his high profile status. I really hope his girlfriend finally sees him for the **** that he is.

I'm not surprised. When he was charged he would have been fully aware of the evidence the police had on him and that it was an open and shut case. Clearly his football career at this level and money was over and he milked it knowing Sunderland couldn't do anything because innocent until proven guilty is so important to our laws.

Because I'm interested in the answer - beside, it was directed at DTWL. No need to get arsy about it.

It's a forum. You post and someone will reply. It doesn't matter who you reply to.

Maybe you should learn some manners, I'm hardly getting arsey as you suggest, if you were interested in the answer why did you query the OP.

Maybe its a Friday and you're enjoying a cola after school...

A study of the Human condition. A look at how our culture shapes individuals and how as a society we deal with moral issues. This case can ponder many questions.

    As an example

If the girl was a year older then legally there would be no case to answer, but would that make Mr. Johnsons actions any less reprehensible?

Sadly he was tempted by her naivity. He should have not put himself into such tempting surroundings.
As a professional footballer he would have been coached in his younger days of the pit falls of becoming a known celebrity. Also how it would affect his career should he be stupid enough to step over the line.
There has been a few that have been caught out.
It would not surprise me if this case does not raise a few more questions and accusations. They usually do........

Not in my opinion. But as stated elsewhere my status as a father to two teenage girls may have an influence on that. The evidence so far does not suggest the girl was 'mature' for her age though even if she were that should not change his responsibilities as an adult. I think almost on a par with Ched Evans the attitudes and behaviours they demonstrate towards females define them as creepy pervs, regardless of convictions or technicalities.

I wonder if Sunderland can get back any of the million or so pounds they've paid him in the last year, I expect not as they were playing him.

Horrible stuff. I teach girls that age and one thing I have to point out is that they have to put up with abusive male comments and vile catcalls all the time. Johnson is not an isolated case - he just had the power to act on it. Our society is much to blame as it fetishizes youth.

As some have highlighted there needs to be a continuing education on social media matters for school students and adults in all walks of life like teachers, dentists and doctors. The vast majority of people are responsible but when an isolated case is out, the media really go to town, Who remembers that Maths teacher and the school girl who eloped to France?

From the evidence so far. Their has been no "tempting" scenario.
In those text messages it's been Johnson who has tried to Sexualise their relationship. She sounds like an innocent girl who just wanted her shirt signed.

If Johnston can't control himself around good looking girls/women then there is no environment for him to be in which does not involve solitary

I thought the usual protocol was that you simply ignore threads in which you have no interest. I don't even understand the gaming thread, and so ignore it. If someone doesn't like cricket they can ignore the (excellent) cricket thread.

DTLW has done a service to the other threads which were being bogged down by discussion of this case (guilty as charged). It means people like you with no interest in the case can ignore this thread and read, say, The Premier League thread, safe in the knowledge that references to the Johnson case will dwindle out. In fact you'd have every right to complain to the mods if there was even a whisper of the case on another thread.

I'm not suggesting that any topic that comes up should have a separate thread. But when a topic starts to dominate that is only obliquely linked to the original thread, as this one was on the PL thread, it's a good idea to generate a new thread, in my view. Nice one DTLW.

I was reading something yesterday about the lack of control from social media. In this case Facebook not adequately policing secret group that were sharing images of young children from catalogues and worse stuff too.

Social media is a huge part of the problem and gives parents more to govern..

I do agree with you Lambo, but Mowgli can voice his opinion. And he might as well do it on the thread where it will be noticed. Bit of a Catch-22 really.
