That's the one Yorkie. The title of the EU's biggest non first div. city had been rotating between Berlin, Cologne and Düsseldorf for quite a few seasons. From the actual population within the city itself, Düsseldorf is just ahead of Sheffield and Leeds. Over to you.

That's the man, Cologne...he of 'Swallows and Amazons' fame. He was sending regular articles to the Daily News newspaper at the time. He hoped to help persuade the British govt to use what influence they had to dissuade Lenin making a separate peace with the Germans. I may be wrong, but I think his second wife was at one time Lenin's secretary. I've just started reading a highly recommended book about Ransome called 'The Last Englishman'.

I actually have all the Bennett novels on my Kindle and read Clayhanger about 3 weeks ago - so the question came at just the right height on to my favoured foot.
What is the connection between St Petersburg and Deptford?
Peter the Great lived in both places. He studied maritime engineering in London (and lived in Deptford) - and used this knowledge to order the building of St Petersburg.

Peter the Great also trashed the place he had in Deptford - there is a Czar Walk or Road or something to commemorate his visit! He also worked in the shipyards in both Holland and London. Not only did he live in St Petersburg - he actually founded the place on a marsh - much to the disgust of the Russian nobility based in Moscow.
