    Yo

I haven't been on here for years (username will back up my period of absence).

Kinda missed all the bands on here as I used to be on here fairly regularly. I use twitter to gauge fan opinion however, NUFC Stats/NUF Index make me angry with their overly negative outlook on life.

Anyway, been reading a few threads to see what the latest chat is and it seems a tad more positive on here :)

On to my main point of discussion (I hope), what is the general view on Paul Dummett's place in the team?

Personally, I feel he gets far too much stick which is totally unjustified. Defensively, I think he is very solid and really puts a shift in. He is rarely outpaced and when faced by a winger 1 on 1 down our left, he comes out on top more often than not.

PD's flaws are on the ball, clearly. He lacks composure on the ball (crowd displeasure affecting confidence?), and he is not a glamorous player in some of the lazy fan opinions. I think part of his lack of ability when in possession of the ball is possibly because he is more of a natural centre half. Similarly to Mike Williamson for want of a better example. Mike was fantastic in his first 18 months at the club, which was purely from a defensive point of view, as he was never good on the ball.

Anyway, hello again, and would like to know your thoughts.

    Ta

Way to open up a can of worms with your first thread. If you had made it a comparison of Dummett and Haidara and their relative merits you would have then been able to get everyone involved. Anyway to summarise the responses you will get before you get them.
There are some who think he is the best left back we have but is not good enough and is a reflection of the weakness of our defence.
There are others who think he is an okay defender but not as good as Haidara coming forward and his distribution is poor.
There are others who think we wont see the best of him till he plays centre back.
    And then there is Doomboy.

    hello mate and welcome back!
I like Dummy. He reminds me of Stevie Watson back in the day... Mr Versatile.
I see him developing further at full back but long term he will be a CB and a solid squad one at that.

Welcome back - especially if you are a fellow supporter of Dummett!!!

I think the lad is a good defender - better at CB than LB, but still good. His distribution can be poor, but doesn't deserve anywhere near the stick he gets. One of thsoe where too many people have already made their minds up and highlight his faults and ignore the positives he contributes.

I fall into the category of, him being the best left back we have, and until someone else comes along, he should be first choice at LB.

And that's my camp. I don't dislike the guy and he has won us points but he's a decent championship-level player. Who on here doesn't think we need a new LB as first choice with Dummett as cover??

IMO. Dummett should be cover CB more than LB, but is adequate as a cover LB. I even think that, given time, he could push on and become a first choice CB.

Albert - This is the last straw after those awful ****ing chinos. Steve Watson!!! You twat, you can't desecrate someone like Watto with that kind of ****. Watto was versatile way beyond Dummy, he was also technically good and solid with the ball. No I'm not having that ****.

Take it back, take it back right now.

I think Dummy is best we have but he is not PL standard left back. Ok as back up. I actually agree with Albert to be honest but more in that he could be a useful Aaron Hughes/John O'Shea type who you keep around because he will always give 100% and do a solidish job.

Watto's somersault throw was a sight to behold, until he got banned from doing it.

Dummett is pure **** at left back.
As a centre back is not a bad 4th choice option.

Comparisons between him, Hughes and Watson quite frankly is revolting! Hughes and Watson were both good players!
