Should England have it's own National Anthem for sporting and cultural events? If so what should it be? Or should we keep 'God Save The Queen?' The Scots have 'Flower of Scotland.' The Welsh have 'Old land of my fathers.' and the Irish have ' A soldiers Song.' Apologies to our foreign posters who have no interest on this.
England Belongs To Me by Cocksparrer OR England by Angelic Upstarts If one of those don't get our national team going then nothing will.
Not sure of the point of National anthems really I would like to see always look on the bright side of life as a bit of fun
God save the Queen is not a 'national' anthem - it is about a family which I have no connection to. I do not want her to reign over us and so will not sing it under any circumstances - I have never seen why it is necessary to be a royalist in order to be seen as patriotic. The whole thing of hereditary monarchy was not an 'English' thing - the Saxons elected their monarchs - they even gave them descriptive adjectives such as 'the unready' or 'the witless' etc. those that came later needed numbers to remember them by (otherwise we could not tell one inbred moron from the other).
Ok, if we could have one for the national football team I would go with this one... Why do you build me up, buttercup just to go and let me down...
Is there some kind of public debate going on about this? Put a poll up Ninesy, with a 'don't care' option for me.
Do I? Remind me why, I have genuinely forgotten.*I quite like William Blake, though he was clearly mad. It's incredibly religious though, appropriate when I read today virtually no one goes to church regularly? * I have no doubt that you are right Col, I get miffed by a stunningly diverse range of things, especially nowadays.
